Yoakum wins out against the Cobras

By Michael Brooks

The Yoakum Bulldogs defeated the Industrial Cobras 56-14 in Yoakum.

The Cobra defense held strong until the final play of the first quarter, when Bulldog Josh Moore broke out for a 37 yard touchdown run. After the extra point was good, Yoakum led 7-0.

Industrial's offense got a drive going in the second quarter. On a fourth and two, Aaron Rosas found a small hole and broke through for what appeared to be a five yard gain and another first down to keep the Cobras drive going, but Rosas was ruled down inches short of a first down.

As the "boos" rained down from the visiting side, Yoakum took over on downs, and on their first play after the turnover, Bulldog Bryson Hagan found Jordan Moore for a 40 yard touchdown pass. Following the extra point, the Bulldogs lead the Cobras 14-0.

In the second, Hagan found Josh Moore for a 62 yard touchdown pass and gave the Bulldogs a 21-0 lead they carried into halftime.

Cowboys fall to 3-2 against Rice

Despite looking for a win, the Cowboys fell to Rice 13-7 at home in Cowboy stadium.

The first half proved to be an extremely defensive one by both teams.

Cowboy Kenny Haynes ran in for the only touchdown of the night with 10:08 left in the second quarter. The extra point was good by Ronaldo Saenz. Edna 7, Rice 0.

A drive early in the third quarter gave the Rice Raiders their first touchdown. The point after was good and tied the score at seven all with 9:47 left.

Two field goals were attempted by Rice, but one was missed and another blocked by Cowboy Brad Kucera.

With eight seconds left in the game Rice found the end zone, but could not add on the extra point. This still gave them the lead they needed to win, and brought the score to 13-7 for a Raider win.

Ganado falls to Shiner

By Millie Diaz

Indian Christian Palacios knew the Shiner Comanches were difficult contenders, but was happy Ganado scored twice against the number 11 ranked team in Texas in his last home game as a senior on Paren'ts Night.

"I think we could've came off the ball defensively much harder and not tested the waters," he said. "But to score on them…that's something."

The Comanches won 55-14. This year is the ninth straight year the two tribes have played each other, with Shiner leading six games to three.

Shiner started their trend early with quarterback Brandon Cerny running in a 17-yard touchdown early in the first.

Indian Michael-Douglas Maresh connected with Garrett McCann in a clean pass nearly 20 yards and McCann ran it to the five yard line. Matthew Sterling finished the job and scored the first Indian touchdown of the night, but the point after was no good, allowing Shiner the lead 7-6.

Cobra volleyball stays undefeated

When Cobra senior Joy Schroeder took the court against Edna on Oct. 21, she knew it was her last home game and she wanted to make it count.
“Before the game I was really nervous and worried, and it was a rival game so I really wanted to win,” she said. “Throughout the game though, it all melted away and it became just another game, and it was fun.”
The Cobras took the lead early on and won the first two sets quickly, 25-18 and 25-12. The tension happened in the third set though, as Edna crept up on the Cobras’ score, tying at 16 and 18 points.
Then Schroeder stepped up and showed it was time for her biggest moments. She attacked on more than one Cowgirl response, immediately killing it into their court on a first hit.

Ganado unable to hold Weimar back

Friday night the Ganado Indians traveled to Weimar to play a crucial game against the Wildcats and lost 27-8. Had the Indians won this game, they would have been in third place in district, securing a play-off run. Altogether, the Indians made good plays, but penalties, inconsistency issues, and Weimar’s offense got them in the end.
Weimar opted to receive the ball on the kickoff and returned it to their own 35 yard line. Two plays later, they scored a 60-yard touchdown to start the game. After only 13 seconds of play, the score was 7-0.
The Indian offense was inconsistent in the first drive, and they continued to be throughout the game. Hand-offs to Matthew Sterling made gains and a pass from quarterback Michael-Douglas Maresh to freshman Gabe Aguilar got the first down at the Wildcats’ 28 yard line.

To find and keep a lead

It was a cool Friday night for a cool win when Edna prevailed over Vanderbilt at Cobra stadium, 38-20. Both teams were ready and jumping with enthusiasm for the county rivalry, and claim to the third annual Lavaca River Showdown trophy for another year.
“It’s always a different level of energy brewing in us when it’s Edna week,” Cobra Logan Gabrysch said. “Coach (Kensey) Allen said if we are true Cobras there was no need to get us pumped us, we were already there.”
Cowboy Zane Strickland said it’s always about bragging rights. “Especially being a senior, games like that for us are about who’s going to walk away from that field and forever say ‘we beat them at our last game.’ It feels amazing to know I will have that with me forever.”

Hopes still high for Ganado after 27-8 loss

By Hannah Janssen

The Ganado Indians traveled to Weimar for a crucial district game and lost 27-8. The Wildcats scored in a matter of seconds once the game started and continued to hammer away.

The Indian defense could not do much to stop the plays; however, they were on the fumbles. The Indians' only touchdown came from a fumble recovery. Aaron Lenhart recovered the ball late in the fourth quarter to score. Quarterback Michael-Douglas Maresh threw to Michael Garza for the two point conversion.

Throughout the game, the offense got few first downs. Maresh was frequently under pressure from the Wildcat defensive line. Go-to players Garrett McCann and Matthew Sterling did have some significant gains and good plays, but they weren't enough.
