Edna clubs score fifth in Sweeny

    The Edna High School golf teams trekked out to the Lake Jackson at the Wilderness Golf Course hosted by Sweeny Feb. 11-12. The girls varsity finished fifth with an overall score of 481 and the boys finished fifth with a 369. Keaton Crabb finished as the fifth boys medalist.
    “This week we played a nice course in Lake Jackson,” said Coach IC Sklar, Jr. “It was very soggy and wet. Keaton had a very good round even though it was cold and wet.”

Maidens start with a 15-0 bang

    The Ganado Maidens opened the season with a rout Feb. 16, picking up where they left off last year by scoring in bunches and relying on shut-down pitching as the Maidens put down Kenedy at home 15-0 in two and a half innings. Ganado opens the season ranked number four in the state by the opening TGCA poll.
    Brianna Ledwik opened her season with a two-hit shutout.

Jackson County Powerlifting

    Ganado two-time state powerlifting champion Megan Taylor raised the bar Feb. 16 with a personal total score best of 1,210 lbs. at the Industrial Powerlifting Meet in Vanderbilt. The Edna girls team would win their meet with a score of 61 and the Industrial boys took the home team win with a 48. Ganado finished third in girls with 23 points and ninth in boys with 4 points. Edna’s boys team was third with 25 points and the Cobra girls came in sixth with 9. Individual results by class with squat, bench press, dead lift and total scores were as follows:

Maidens play hard to the buzzer, but fall to Marlins

    The Ganado Maidens traveled to Refugio Feb. 15 for the Area round showdown of the UIL basketball playoffs. The Maidens faced the District 1A-31 champions and number 8 ranked team in the state of Texas, the Port Aransas Lady Marlins. The Maidens were coming off their bi-district win over Pettus Feb. 12. The match up with the 28-4 Port Aransas Lady Marlins set up to be a good one and neither team disappointed.
    Ganado started the game with a three pointer by Ashley Bridges to set the tone of the game. However, the Lady Marlins did not back down and stormed out to a 12-5 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Lady Cobras and Cowgirls will face off to determine play-off

On Feb. 1 the Edna Cowgirls visited the pit of the Industrial Cobras. That night Industrial won the game with a three pointer with no time to spare. Both teams were now tied for third. If any team lost their next district game they were out of the playoff for district champs. The following games occurred on Feb. 5: Industrial 37, Tidehaven 30 Industrial played Tidehaven away. Industrial won 37-30. The Lady Cobras came out strong. They controlled
Tidehaven’s defense to two points scored meanwhile racking up the backboard to 11 points. Industrial led 19-6 in the first half. With the lead it allowed the Lady Cobras to be in control in the second half.

Edna starts swinging

The Cowboys had their first scrimmage taking on the St. Joe Flyers on Feb. 8. Going into the scrimmage Coach Kensey Allen was looking forward to seeing how they were going to hit the ball. The Cowboys made some major overhauls on their swings these first two weeks and were really anxious to see the results of all their hard work. “These guys really have bought into the changes we have been trying to make and really hit the ball well,” said Allen.

Indians take heart for win

Flatonia 46, Ganado 30 On Feb. 8 the Ganado Indians hosted Flatonia and lost 46-30. “The kids just didn’t make the shots,” replied Coach John Armstrong. Brandon Lister led the team in scoring with 9 points. Clay Vesely had 5 assists and 5 rebounds. Kyle Sparkman had 6 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists. Cody Morales had 5 steals. The Indians will have played the Weimar Wildcats on Feb. 12 away. “We will have to play extremely well to have a chance to win,” according to Armstrong. “We will need to make some shots''.
