Soto twins find Cougar blood in their softball future

By Millie Diaz
Sports Writer
One has a fluid swing at the plate, and her sister has great hands and quick footwork. Ashley and Kirstie Soto, seniors at Edna High School, signed letters of intent to play softball at Coastal Bend College in Beeville for the 2017-18 fall and spring seasons, and they said they’re ready to push themselves at the next level.
Although the girls are currently playing basketball, they have been playing Select softball in their offseasons, and were noticed by Frank and Tony Moron, Coastal Bend softball father and son coaches, at a Select tournament played at the college. They are looking to play infield spots with Kirstie at shortstop and Ashley at third base, but it’s not set in stone just yet.
Tony, assistant coach, said the Coastal Bend program is only 10 years old, and they just had their best season to date earlier this year.

Sparkman hopes to light up Toronto Blue Jays after Rule 5 Draft

By Millie Diaz
Sports Writer
Ganado-bred Glenn Sparkman, better known as “Sparky” to Jackson County, is about to enter the biggest opportunity of his baseball career yet, all due to a gamble. In the 2013 draft the right-handed pitcher was selected in round 20 by the Kansas City Royals.
But the Royals had an option this year: they could either protect Sparkman or give him a chance to see if he could get picked up by another team. The Royals took the gamble and chose not to protect the 24-year old, but it appears to have worked out in Sparkman’s favor.
He was the 13th pick in the Rule 5 Draft by the big leagues: the Toronto Blue Jays.

Soto twins sign with Coastal Bend College

Ashley and Kirstie Soto signed a letter of intent to pllay softball with Coastal Bend College in Beeville today in the Edna High School Dome gym.

Tony Moron, assistant softball coach at Coastal Bend, said the first thing he noticed about the girls was their knowledge of the sport on the field.

"With both of them it's like having coaches on the field," he said.

The twins will receive partial scholarships to play the 2017 fall and 2018 spring softball seasons for Coastal Bend.

Edna earns a Bi-District win against Luling

By Millie Diaz

The Bi-district round of football for Region 4 between the Edna Cowboys and Luling Eagles came down to a 35 yard field goal kicked by Ronaldo Saenz in the last seconds for an Edna win 24-21. Until then both teams were tied at 21.

In addition, Edna had a clean air game that helped them achieve their accumulated downs more easily.

To start, the team traded punts, but Edna scored first when Cowboy Kenny Haynes rushed in at the 7:17 mark in the first quarter, and Luling used their next drive to push into Edna's red zone. Eagle Wyatt Bullock ran in five yards to give Luling six points plus a good point after to tie the score at seven all early in the second quarter.

Ganado falls to Yorktown

By Hannah Janssen

The Ganado Indians ended their season tonight with a 48-20 loss to the Yorktown Wildcats.

The game started out closely, with the first half ending with a Yorktown lead 14-12. In the first half, Garrett McCann scored in the firs three minutes. Yorktown answered with five minutes to-go, scoring the PAT, unlike Ganado. At the end of the first, the score was 7-6.

To start the second quarter, the Indian offense was set up at the Yorktown 4 yard line, 2nd and goal. Michael-Douglas Maresh kept the ball for the touchdown. Oscar Almeda didn't get the extra point this time either. Yorktown returned the kick-off to Ganado's 20 yard-line and scored, raising the score to the tight 14-12 that ended the half.

Cobras end with a bang

By Michael Brooks

Industrial came into the game with a goal of finishing the season at .500, and both the offense and the defense made sure that would happen. The Cobras rolled over the Palacios Sharks with a final score of 48-0.

Halfway through the first quarter, Avery Milner put the Cobras on the scoreboard first with a 37 yard touchdown run. A few minutes later, Milner again broke free, this time for 78 yard touchdown run, and the Cobras took a 13-0 lead.

Aaron Rosas kept the ground game going, first running over several Sharks defenders, and then breaking free on a 9 yard touchdown run, giving the Cobras a 20-0 first quarter lead.

In the second quarter, the Cobras showed they could also attack through the air. Logan Gabrysch connected with Peyton Prukop for a 38 yard touchdown pass that gave the Cobras a 27-0 lead.

3A Hallettsville earns first place, Edna second

The Cowboys started off their week thinking they may or may not make it into the playoffs. But due to an ineligible Rice football player the win they earned against Edna was forfeited, putting Van Vleck out of the running and giving Edna an opportunity to win another District Championship.

Hallettsville was ultimately the victor though, and won with a final score of 56-35. The undefeated Brahmas took the top seed in District 14 3A playoffs, while Edna slipped into the number two spot.

The Cowboys were forced to punt on their first offensive possession. The Brahmas came out swinging hard and dominated the first quarter with three touchdowns and solid PATs. The Brahmas led 21-0.
