Thursday’s Dove Hunting Season Opening Day a Big Deal in Texas

The first of September in Texas sounds a lot like the fourth of July with the steady “pop, pop, pop” of shotgun reports as upwards of a quarter million dove hunters take to the fields across the state for the tradition-rich opening day of the season.     “The opening of dove season is a big part of our state’s hunting heritage,” said Dave Morrison, big game program director with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. “It gives families and friends an opportunity to enjoy a day in the out of doors and share in our great state’s bountiful natural resources.”     Texas is home to several subspecies of dove, some are protected, but legal to hunt, such as the mourning, white-winged and white-tipped varieties. Others, like the rock dove and Eurasian collared, are unprotected and can be hunted. And, some, like the Inca dove, band-tailed pigeon and common ground dove, are protected and cannot be hunted.

Cobras feast on Brahmas

The Industrial Cobras sacked the Stockdale Brahma quarterback in end zone inside four minutes for the first score and never looked back. Cobra runningback Avery Milner waltzed through an open door from his line from the Industrial side of midfield and Industrial was up 9-0 at 6:20 in the first.
The only gap in Cobra defense in first half was a slow-developing screen pass to the halfback that crossed half field to go the distance.
Industrial responded as Milner followed his linemen around the side and scored from a couple yards out at 7:44 in the second quarter, 16-7 Industrial.
Eating up most of third quarter, Stockdale made a field goal at the 3:04 mark, closing the gap to 16-10, Industrial. The Cobras’ Milner scored from 45 yards out barely a minute later to put Industrial firmly in control, 22-10.

Indians hammer Hornets

The Ganado Indians won their season opener against the Louise Hornets 47-8.
The Indian offense was highly successful, passing a lot more and giving many different players the ball. The Indians’ success didn’t come perfectly; there were many fumbles, flags, and other setbacks. Head Coach Keith Wright blames it on first game nerves, but is still very proud of the team’s performance, praising the offense. The first touchdown of the night for the Indians came with carries by seniors Matthew Sterling and Garrett McCann set the Indians up with first and goal, leaving senior quarterback Michael-Douglas Maresh to finish the job in the first quarter, 6-0.
The second quarter was dominated offensively by Sterling and McCann, scoring three touchdowns together, and Sterling with a roughly 60 yard kick-off return, following the Hornets’ only touchdown of the night.

Industrial-grade effort for Cobras

For this year’s model Cobra offense, their running backs and quarterback will be their offensive key. “Our offensive line has a lot of returning athletes,” says Head Coach Kensey Allen.
“So we’re right there in the middle of it offensively. We’ll go as far as our offensive line takes us. They’re our most improved group. They’ve done a good job getting after it so far, and Coach Mike Treybig has gotten after it, getting them there. We expect big things.”
Defensively, Allen points to their defensive tackles up front and their defensive backs...

Ready to rodeo

Head Coach Huey Chancellor has his eyes on his team, and aspirations for his team beyond school.
“No doubt, we have three seniors we’ve had since they were sophomores in Landon O’Connor (QB/LB), Wyatt Neuman (OL/DL) and Cade Orsak (WR/DB). Those guys have been solid the last two years, and their experience and ability has stood out. They’ve come in in shape with their mindset ready and they know what they’re doing. They’ve been a blessing.”
Overall the defense has played with good effort...
