Cobras rattle out another district win

By Millie Diaz

Industrial Cobras (20-7, 2-0) swept their second district game against Boling in three sets to zero, despite some of their big players fighting off illness.

Joy Scroeder, Savhannah Kitchens and Brooke Williams weren't feeling well today, but were still able to help their team in short spurts. Other members of the Cobras realized it was time to step up.

The game started with a long rally in the first point, and Boling put two points on the board before Cobra freshman Kylann Griffith made a kill landing in the middle back of Bulldog territory. Sophomore Maddison Heibel served an ace and sophomore Denae Brown landed a kill in mid-court to bring the score to 4-3.

Cobras prevent Flyers take-off

By Paul Harrison

A defensive struggle in Victoria Sept. 16 saw the game decided in the final minutes as Industrial beat the St. Joseph Flyers on the road 28-20.

The teams totaled 20 penalties, but turnovers made the difference as a pair of Flyer turnovers inside their 20-yard line we converted into Cobra points to give Industrial the lead early in the second quarter. A fumble by the Cobras at midfield tied the game when it was returned for a score, with the 2-point conversion, 14-all.

Industrial righted the ship and locked it down to two penalties for the rest of the game. An interception with four minutes to play gave Industrial the ball back with the lead.

The Cobras killed clock for the final score after a St. Joe penalty on fourth-and-inches gave Industrial a fresh set of downs.

Indians cage the Panthers

  By Hannah Janssen

Ganado traveled to Danbury and won 21-6, but you would never have guessed that result from the first two quarters.

In fact, the first half itself was rather uneventful. The Indians received the ball on the kick-off, but did not make it to the end zone. The offense, led by senior quarterback Michael-Douglas Maresh, only attempted to pass the ball twice, both incompletions, and the running game didn’t make many gains.

An early play was even fumbled by senior running back Matthew Sterling and recovered by Danbury, where they got a first down at the fifteen yard line. Only a short drive happened in the second quarter, with the exception of an impressive 25-yard run by senior running back Garrett McCann in the first.

Cowboys get scratched

By Millie Diaz

In the huddle on the football field after Refugio won against Edna 37-0, Head Coach Huey Chancellor told the Cowboys not to panic.

"That's a good football team, and you've got to give them praise," he said. "Next week we're playing a team I think we can win against (Sweeny), and then we can go two and two. Then district starts, and all of our dreams are still there. Don't panic."

Yes, Refugio won the game, but not without a bag of penalties to boot. Head Coach Jason Herring said he believed his team to have around 100 yards taken away in penalties, especially in the second quarter, due to many false starts and an offensive pass interference in the third.

A Quick Cobra Three

By Millie Diaz

In a clean three-set match, Cobras took their first district win against Tidehaven, 25-6, 25-6 and 25-8.

"Tidehaven kept us with us tonight," Savhannah Kitchens said.

The Tigerettes went after every ball, but were no match for Industrial tonight, as the girls showed they were a well-oiled team with heavy yet accurate kills from outside hitter Kitchens and sneaky, careful moves from Maddison Heibel. Both helped their team score runs consistently to make the night a smooth win.

Heibel said she has leaned on her mental game more than her physical this season to help her read the court and find the holes in the opposing team, something she has learning from Cobra Coach Jenna Treybig and her club volleyball coaches.

"I watch and think about what the other side is doing and not just pay attention to what we're doing," the setter said. "It's about watching them and do what they least expect."

Industrial swats Hornets

Industrial Cobras Logan Gabrysch

After an hour and a half delay, the Industrial Cobras thumped Louise on the road 50-6.

Industrial spread the ball around, utilizing a stable of backs to move the chains. Avery Milner struck first, a 31-yard run to put the Cobras up 7-0. Logan Gabrysch hit Mason Maraggia for a pass around the 30 that he took the distance, 13-0 Industrial 1:15 in the first.

Ethan McMullen crossed the goal line from 3 yards out, 10:25 in the second quarter, 21-0 Cobras. With two minutes to play in the quarter, Milner danced along the sideline for a 20-yard run to score, 28-0, Industrial up at the half.

In the third quarter, Gabrysch found Peyton Prukop downfield who took it in for a 33-yard score, 36-0. Louise found the endzone as the quarter closed for their only point, 36-6 Industrial.

Gabrysch kept the ball to score from 31 yards out, 43-6. McMullen scored again on a goalline push with 5:38 to play for the final score, Industrial 50, Louise 6.

Indians rained out

The Indians traveled to Palacios for their second week of pre-district play. The weather didn't look promising, but the game went ahead anyway.
The Indians started off receiving the ball on the kick-off, and it was down at the Indians' 34 yard-line. First play of the game, the Indians scored. Senior quarterback Michael-Douglas Maresh handed off to senior running back Matthew Sterling, and he ran it all the way to the end zone. The two-point conversion attempt was successful. The score stayed at 8-0 for the remainder of the quarter, as neither team could make many gains. At the point, though, the lightning in the area got too close, and after a 30 minute delay, officials cancelled the game.

Cobras put Brahmas out to pasture

Kickoff time at Industrial came Aug.26, and Stockdale came for the spectacle as the Cobras branded the Brahmas 37-16.     Industrial showed effort early and it paid off, as a pile of Cobras buried the Stockdale quarterback under Logan Gabrysch, Jesse Rodriguez and Julian Sanchez in end zone at 8:02 for the first score. Cobra running back Avery Milner waltzed through an open door from his line from the Industrial side of midfield and Industrial was up 9-0 at 6:20 in the first.     “It was everything we could ask for from a first game,” said Industrial Head Coach Kensey Allen. “You could feel it from the kids this week and on the practice field, they felt like they had a shot to win. It's like I said earlier - confidence goes a long way. Our kids did a good job practicing and preparing and I told them after the game, this is where preparation meets execution. I thought we executed well and I told him the great thing is we made a lot of mistakes, but we still won the game.”

Indians wage war on Hornets

The Ganado Indians faced the Louise Hornets Aug. 26 and dominated 47-8.     “We’re getting better every week, and at times we played extremely well tonight,” Head Coach Keith Wright said of the game.  “I don’t think the penalties had any bearing... one of the things I was concerned with was we did turn the ball over.” Despite the turnovers and mistakes made in any season’s first game, Wright recognized the success of his offense, saying “We did throw the ball really well, we opened up our offense.  A lot of guys got the ball, and M.D. [Maresh] did good at running the offense.”

Cowboys pluck Luling Eagles

The Edna Cowboys started their season with a win at home against the Luling Eagles, 34-25.     Both the Cowboys defense and Eagles defense came out very strong, forcing several three and outs.

“A win is a win, and that's all that really matters,” said Edna senior wide out/defensive back Cade Orsak. “There are a lot of little sloppy details that need to be worked on with offense, defense and special teams.     “Everyone has their own jobs that they need to get better at, and if we do that we will come back next time and be even better.”

“We’ll keep working harder in practice, and pick up our execution level,” said Coach Nairn. The Cowboys dedicate a week to practice, then travel to East Bernard Sept. 9, kickoff at 7:30 p.m.
