County tennis finds lobs

    Industrial and Edna tennis teams competed in a Goliad tennis meet on March 21 and 22.
    In the boys doubles, Cobras Nathan Mader and Coree Nowlin beat Karnes City 8-0, and lost to Bishop 5-8. Cowboys Carlos Romer and Jacob Jalomo lost to Bishop 1-8, and lost to Karnes City 0-6.
    In the mixed doubles Cobras Jaron Hayden and Kayla Weixelman lost to Stockdale 6-8, and beat Yoakum 6-2.
    Cobra Reagan Doyle in the girls singles lost to Karnes City 5-8, and beat El Campo 6-1. Cowgirl Michelle Medina lost to Seguin 3-8 and lost to Runge 2-6.
    Two teams competed in the girls doubles, Cobras Skylar Chreene and Jessica Martin beat Runge 8-0, and lost to McMullen 4-8. Cobras Ashyln Brown and Nallely Chavarria lost to Seguin 4-8, and beat Refugio 6-4. Cowgirl sisters Angelou and Eva Martos lost to Yoakum 5-8 and beat Runge 6-0.

Indians learn curve

    Ganado Indians won out over Fayetteville on March 22 with a final score of 9-8.
    The winning pitcher was Michael-Douglas Maresh, with a save by Matt Bridges.
    Hitting for the Indians, Jose Gonzalez was two for four with a triple and two runs batted in, while Logan Hurt was one for three with a double. Garrett McCann was one for four with a double and two runs batted in, and Christian Palacios was one for two with two runs batted in. Maresh was also one for two with a double.
    Logan Hurt was the starting pitcher and pitched a little over four innings. He gave up six runs, two earned runs, two walks and had two strikeouts. Caleb Thedford came in and pitched almost a full inning. He gave up two runs but none of those were earned. Maresh then came in for one inning and gave up one walk and one hit. Bridges came in for the save in one inning and had one strikeout.

Cowboys get into district

    Edna Cowboys suffered a tough loss in their District opener to Rice Consolidated, with a final score of 6-3.
    So far their district record is 0-2, but Head Coach Troy Holcomb said don’t let the numbers fool you.
    “We are young and getting better with each game,” he said. “Each player has accepted their role and have played very well the whole season. What we need to learn is how to finish games and hold onto leads.”
    Pitching for the ‘Boys in the Rice game was Dylan “Ya-Ya” Yaws and Paul Cortez. Yaws pitched four innings and gave up seven hits, had six strikeouts, one walk, six runs and five errors. He left one on the bases. Cortez pitched two innings and gave up a hit and had one strikeout.

Alexander rises to the top

Brandon Alexander, a senior at Industrial High School, has been selected as one of the top basketball players in Texas and invited to participate in the 17th Texas Roundup All Star game to be held on March 19th in Maypearl, Texas.  The Texas Roundup considered one of the state’s most prestigious events, selects the state’s top 24 boys and girls from Class 1A, 2A, 3A, and 4A schools.  Players selected are chosen from hundreds of nominations statewide. The boys game will begin at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, March 19th.

Brandon has been a 4 year starter for the Cobras and was named the District MVP for 28 3A for the past two year.  This year he averaged over 25 points per game and grabbed over 12 rebounds per game leading the Cobras to the Regional Quarterfinals for the first time since 2005.

Jackson County lifts themselves to a step above

    Ganado competed in an Altair Rice powerlifting meet, and Maiden Alexis Mojica placed second in the 132 lb. weight class, squat 305, bench press 120, dead lift 315.
    Edna and Industrial competed in a Sweeny meet. Edna Cowgirls placed third overall while the Industrial Cobras placed tenth overall.
