Cowboys get scratched

By Millie Diaz

In the huddle on the football field after Refugio won against Edna 37-0, Head Coach Huey Chancellor told the Cowboys not to panic.

"That's a good football team, and you've got to give them praise," he said. "Next week we're playing a team I think we can win against (Sweeny), and then we can go two and two. Then district starts, and all of our dreams are still there. Don't panic."

Yes, Refugio won the game, but not without a bag of penalties to boot. Head Coach Jason Herring said he believed his team to have around 100 yards taken away in penalties, especially in the second quarter, due to many false starts and an offensive pass interference in the third.

"We're our own worst enemy, like in the second quarter today. We have a lot to clean up and polish to execute four quarters and not just the first and third quarters, like tonight," Herring said. He spoke of the pressure being the number one team in the state, with Shiner directly behind them in the number two spot, Weimar number seven and Yorktown number 12. "Ganado can play some good football as well," he added.

Refugio scored at the 8:44 in the first quarter, and again with 3:52 left. Edna held them back for the most part in the second quarter, only giving the Bobcats a safety due to a tackle in the end zone. At halftime Refugio led 16-0.

In the third quarter, Refugio scored with 6:02 left, and again at the 4:07 mark. By then the Cats led with 30 points. Edna was able to make some big plays, but it wasn't enough to made a dent in the Refugio defense. Another Bobcat touchdown was executed with 4:40 left in the game.

Refugio will be playing the number two team in the state next week, 4A Geronimo Navarro, who beat LaGrange 35-7 tonight.

The loss brings Edna's record to 1-2. They will be traveling to Sweeny next week before starting district the week after.

Edna and Refugio last met in 2013, and the Bobcats won 42-19.

Cowboy fans must remember the words Chancellor gave to his team: Don't panic. Edna is still the defending District 14-3A champions.

"When I started with you guys we were 1-4 and last year we were 2-3 when we went into district play," he said. "We're going to be okay. Don't panic."
