Ganado ISD voters pass TRE

Taxpayers in the Ganado Independent School District voted to ratify the $1.17 maintenance and operations tax rate during the Aug. 6 tax ratification election. The overall results were 60 for and 7 against.
The TRE will not result in an increase in the total tax rate because the board will lower the interest and sinking fund tax rate to match this year’s total tax rate, which is $1.2082, Ganado ISD Superintendent Jeff Black said.

EISD proposed budget would lower tax rate

Edna Independent School District Board of Trustees got their first glimpse of the 2013-14 budget during a special meeting on Aug. 5. The total proposed budget is $12,987,152 and the proposed tax rate is $1.3096, which is less than last year’s tax rate of $1.4106.
Edna ISD Superintendent Bob Wells said trustees will consider approving the budget at its regular meeting on Monday, Aug. 19. The public will have a chance to comment on the budget before a vote is taken at the regular meeting. Wells said the budget is balanced because the total amount in expenditures and revenue match. Last year’s budget revenues are $16,074,846. Revenue  for this year is $12,987,152.

Edna police solve burglary

Two Edna juveniles have been detained and referred to Juvenile Court for the July 22 burglary of the Jackson County Services Building on July 30.
“The officers followed several leads that ultimately led them to the two young men,” Edna Police Chief Clinton Wooldridge said.
Wooldridge said the two boys, ages 15 and 16, claimed the side door of the building that faces the Jackson County Senior Citizen building had been propped open. He also said the juveniles told police they were just walking along the street (after curfew hours) when they found one of the doors of the services building open.
“That apparently prompted them to go inside and forcibly enter most of the offices in the building and steal a wide variety of property,” he said.

Church members practice what they preach

A mission project group from the First United Methodist Church in Edna was in Weslaco from June 20-24 to build a home for a family with three children. It is the sixth project that they have completed over a few years, and the first trip that has been fully funded by the church without help from other churches or government grants. Twenty-seven people from the FUMC, youth and adults alike, traveled way down south to make a family’s life better to live.
