Coat drive spreads warmth

The City of Edna held its annual coat drive during November. All of the donated coats were given to Helping Hands of Jackson County. “Our Annual Coat Drive was once again a success thanks to all the thoughtful citizens who donated new and gently used coats,” said Becky Miska, city secretary. Rustler All Stars

The following were named Rustler All Stars: sixth graders- Miranda Fikes, Lillian Currier-Hover, Dakota Thomas, Carlos Willis; seventh graders- Camelia Cortes, Coleton Davis, Brianna Johnston, Morgan Neuman; and eighth graders- Hector Andres, Efrain Guerra, Lexi Koester and Sandra Salazar.

Taking the healthy challenge

The Edna ISD faculty participated in a six-week Healthy Habit Challenge. There were 12 teams comprised of three employees from all campuses. Teams earned points by choosing habits from a list of healthy activities such as walking, drinking lots of water, eating fruits and vegetables, and doing good deeds. An awards ceremony was held Nov. 14 and the first place team was “The Meltaways” Vanessa Koehn, Crystal Hamilton and Ulma Armendariz. Second place was “The M&N’s” Nancy Melton, Nancy Schaffer, and Michele Orsak, and third place was “The Hungry Heifers” Lisa Newbern, Crystal Garza and Peble Sorensen. Lisa Newbern was the grand prize winner and received a free one-year membership to the Jackson County Hospital Wellness Center. McCarrell named officer of the year

Jason McCarrell was named Officer of the Year by the Jackson County 100 Club. McCarrell is a deputy for the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office. The officer of the year is chosen by his peers. McCarrell has worked for the sheriff’s office since 2006.  According to Sheriff Andy Louderback, McCarrell continues to exhibit all the character traits of a dedicated officer.  “He is a consummate professional,” Louderback said. “ Jason believes, as I do, that law enforcement is about public servitude.  Along with giving extra effort helping our citizens, Jason also displays integrity, character, and  leadership skills.  I am very proud of the job Jason has done for Jackson County Law Enforcement and he is a true asset to this county.” From left are Louderback, McCarrell, and W.H. Students donate canned goods

The Edna Junior High held a canned food drive. Everyone who donated cans has helped the community by helping Helping Hands. Altogether EJH gathered 1,413 cans. There are two winners in the contest because one class used its knowledge of proportions and made sure the school knew about that knowledge as well. Mrs. Koop’s class won for biggest percentage of cans brought per student. Her class averaged 15 food items per student. Coach Ken Ballinger’s class won for most cans brought. His class had a total of 302 cans. Each classroom will be visited during sixth period with party goodies. From left are Robin Etheredge, Kendall Bradley, Kaitlyn Morton and Candace Floyd.

LNRA alligator harvest reduces pest population

 

The Lavaca-Navidad River Authority board met on Wednesday, Nov. 20 at the Harry Hafernick center. Among other things, numbers were given from this year’s alligator harvest, executed by Janik Alligators, LLC, based out of El Campo.
Charles Reckaway, LNRA deputy general manager, said the harvest was done to help control the alligator population near the water . “Janik Alligators harvested 18 nests, 581 eggs, and tagged 25 alligators, the rest were trapped. Eight people were allowed to go on the guided hunt as well,” said Reckaway. “The harvest was successful.”

Pursuit ends in Edna

A pursuit that was initiated in Victoria ended in Edna today around 3 p.m. The vehicle had been spiked. Edna Police Chief Clinton Wooldridge said the Victoria Police Department had called Jackson County for assistance. Wooldridge said spike strips were placed. 

Both front tires of the vehicle were blown out after running over the spike strips. The vehicle was headed towards Edna on U.S. 59 before going through Amos Service Station on Main Street. It came to a complete stop near Colorado Street and Houston Street.

He said two occupants were arrested by Victoria police officers and transported back to Victoria.

No one was injured.

Mobile pantry distributes food

The Food Bank of Victoria brought its mobile pantry to the Assembly of God Church in Edna on Nov. 22. Individuals from around the area received various fresh food items and canned goods.
