Jumping for joy

Ganado 4-Her is turkey grand

Ganado's Hannah Janssen and her turkey, Mr. Evil, named after the menace in the Austin Powers movies, was awarded Grand Champion in this year's Jackson COunty Youth Fair, and she sold Mr. Evil for $4,600 at the auction later that week. She also served as an ambassador for the youth fair.

Her love for cattle surpasses any lasting fear

 

A lot can happen in a year, and Sheri Ellis will attest to that. The Jackson County Youth Fair is always a busy time for the Ellis family. Their daughter, Kalli, a sophomore at Industrial High School, has shown the grand champion steer four times at the JCYF and Sheri and her husband, Laddie, are right there with her all the way. But a freak accident on Sept. 25, 2012 prevented her from seeing her daughter take grand champion honors that year and nearly took her life.

Ellis takes fourth grand champion win at fair

 

Standing next to the 1,230 pound steer, Industrial High School sophomore Kalli Ellis is poised and confident. She handles the large animal with the experience gained from many hours spent walking, feeding, and bathing it. Suspect in custody for the murder of James Johnson

The Jackson, Miss. Police Department  has a suspect in custody for the murder of James Johnson, 56, of Ganado. 

Shun Brown, 17, has confessed to being responsible for the death of Johnson, according to a news release sent out by the Jackson Police Department.

The suspect allegedly shot and killed Johnson on Oct.  13 while trying to rob him in a Motel 6 parking lot.

Brown is charged with capital murder.

Johnson was in Jackson to compete this week in the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Central Open Tournament on the Ross Barnett Reservoir. Tournament organizers plan to honor him and his family during the event, which begins Thursday, Oct. 17.
