2013 Stock the Stock competition

Industrial FFA and Edna FFA competed in the 1st Annual FFA Stock the Stock Trailer. Students collected canned goods and other non-perishable items all week long. Then on Friday, Oct. 18, FFA Chapters loaded everything into their stock trailers and hauled it to the football game where they collected more items as people showed up to the game.  Industrial FFA won with by collecting over 3,900 items to be given to Food Bank of the Golden Crescent in Victoria. Thirty 50-gallon drum barrels worth of food were collected by both schools. Local artist wins with paintings of places she has seen

 

Rita Adelman recently received a Best of Show for her painting of Goose Lake, Colorado at the 2013 Jackson County Youth Fair. Her painting of Banff National Park in Canada placed second.
She has entered oil paintings at the JCYF family department for about five years.

Going to make a difference

The Monsanto Fund gave the EISD $10,000 through their program, the America’s Farmers Grow Rural Education. Pictured left, Aaron Turner, Monsanto Technology Development Representative, Kurtis Koop, Principles of Ag/Ag Mechanics Edna high school teacher, Dalton Martin and Matthew Kucera, Edna FFA officer. Money will go towards purchasing new welders, accessories and other fabrication tools for the Principles of Agriculture, Agricultural Mechanics and Agricultural Fabrication classes. The school district hopes the classes will eventually provide career certifications for students.

Judgment House returns to FBC

Construction and rehearsals are well underway at First Baptist Church of Edna for Judgment House 2013, “Hannah’s Hope.”  Presentations will be Wednesday, Nov. 6 and Saturday through Tuesday, Nov. 9-12.  Admission is free.  Call 361-235-2828 for reservations. Actors in practice Hell include Thomas Muschalek, Greg Wise, Seth Cunningham, Trey Ganem, James Symonds, and Matthew Beaird.

Winners of the PTO bakeless bake sale fundraiser at Edna Elementary School were announced. The following winners are: 1st place - Karsyn Damborsky, 2nd grade, won an iPod Nano and iTunes gift card and 2nd place- Jhonni Poyer, 5th grade, won a iPod shuffle and iTunes gift card

County 4H makes a difference

Jackson County 4H members stocked the shelves at Helping Hands collected during the One Day 4H Countywide Food Drive. With the help of the community they collected 2,680 pounds of food which will supply Helping Hands with canned goods for a little over 3 months. Before the donation, the shelves and drawers at Helping Hands were bare.  Marcella Ramsbacher, executive director of Helping Hands requested 4H deliver the food before Thursday so that the center would not have to turn clients away.  Members in the photo include Shane Darilek, Paxton Koop, Courtney Mercer, Alexis Miller, Landon Miller, Taylor Darilek, Hannah Janssen, Sydni Engelmohr, Maci Engelmohr and Lane Koop. Taylor Darilek, Senior 4H, has participated in stocking the shelves at Helping Hands since the inception of One Day 4H five years ago.

Casino Night returns to BRC

Edna Rotary Club will hold its annual Casino Night at Chili Spill at Brackenridge Main Event Center on Friday, Nov. 8 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $25 each and include door prizes, snacks and free beer. There will be slot machines, craps, blackjack, Texas Hold’em tables, and more. Raffle prizes include a 2-night stay at L’auberge Casino and Resort in Lake Charles, Louisiana, a tailgate feeder and more. Never too young to Relay

Even the youngsters get involved in raising money for a good cause. Melanie and Kelly Laredo and Alina Gonzales held a bake sale in downtown Edna on Oct. 20 to raise money for their Relay for Life team, Little Ones Fighting Back. Melanie and Kelly, from left, are the daughters of Victor and Tiffany Laredo, and Gonzales is the daughter of Ricky and Jade Gonzales. The Jackson County Relay for Life will be held at the Edna Cowboy Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 26 beginning at 7 p.m. See the special Relay for Life section in this newspaper for more information on the Relay.
