Ganado Man charged with murder

By Lisa Shapiro
Staff Writer
A Ganado man is being charged with first degree murder after allegedly striking his girlfriend with his 2007 Cadillac. He is currently in custody with a bail set at $1 million.
Wharton County Sheriff’s Office Lieutenant Raymond Jansky said Ganado’s Robert Vasquez, 27, and Abigail Zapata, 26, had an altercation. Jansky said Zapata had allegedly asked if she could get out of the vehicle and that she did. He said the suspect told authorities he had continued driving home.
Vasquez called the Wharton County Sheriff’s Office at about 7 a.m. to report Zapata’s body was left in a ditch on Dec. 11 at State Highway 71 south of a mile from Farm-to-Market 2674.
Jansky said he did not know when the incident occurred, but there was a timeline between midnight to 7 a.m. on Dec. 11. He said the sheriff’s department is still interviewing witnesses and analyzing evidence.
