Edna falls to Goliad in Area round
By Michael Brooks
Edna's season ends with 22-17 Area round loss to Goliad.
A 30 yard touchdown pass from Goliad Tiger quarterback Rocky Morris to Trevor Parr with 47 seconds left in the game ended the Edna Cowboys season.
After Edna was forced to punt on the opening drive of the game, Goliad put together a 38 yard drive that ended with a 4 yard touchdown run by Goliad's Logan Bland.
A strong North wind played havoc with both teams kicking game throughout. The Tigers had a chance to put 3 more points on the board in the first quarter, but a 46 yard wind-aided field goal attempt by Ojeda Lee came up just short, and the Goliad's lead remained 7-0.
Two plays after Ronaldo Saenz landed a spectacular 68 yard punt that pinned Goliad at their own 4 yard line, Edna recovered a fumble at the 12, but were unable to move the ball. With the wind at his back, Saenz hit a 31 yard field goal that cut the Tigers lead to 7-3.
Both defenses ruled the first half. Aside from Goliads opening touchdown drive, Edna played a "bend but don't break defense," but Goliads defense was even tougher; at the end of the first half, Edna had 24 total yards offense, and their only first down was on a penalty.
Quarterback Landon O'Connor was 0-7 on pass attempts.
Edna came out fired up in the third quarter. After forcing a three and out on Goliad's first possession, Edna marched down the field, converting two fourth and one's along the way, and an O'Connor 1 yard touchdown run gave Edna their first lead of the game, 10-7.
After recovering a fumble on Goliads next drive, Edna again went for it on fourth and one. This time Edna fumbled, and Goliad recovered. But Goliad would fumble it right back to Edna, and this time the Cowboys made them pay for their mistake when O'Connor scored on a 20 yard quarterback keeper that gave Edna a 17-7 lead.
After a stalled Edna drive, Saenz punted into the wind, and only netted 7 yards. That gave Goliad the ball at Edna's 19 yard line. On a fourth and 8, Orion Hosey scored on a reverse, that cut the cowboys lead to 17-14.
After Edna once again was unable to move the ball, a faulty snap on the punt attempt sailed out of the endzone for a safety, and Edna held a 17-16 lead with just over 2 minutes left in the game.
Goliad faced a fourth and inches from their own 31 yard with just over a minute left in their season. A missed field goal would've most likely ended their season, and they decided not to chance it. They gained just over a yard and got the first down, and then Morris found Parr for the 30 yard touchdown pass. After a failed two point conversion attempt, Goliad lead 22-17 with 47 seconds left in the game.
An intercepted O'Connor hail mary pass ended the game, and Edna's season, a few plays later.
Edna ended the season at 6-6.
Goliad improved to 9-3 and will face Yoakum in the regional round next week.
