Cobras end with a bang

By Michael Brooks

Industrial came into the game with a goal of finishing the season at .500, and both the offense and the defense made sure that would happen. The Cobras rolled over the Palacios Sharks with a final score of 48-0.

Halfway through the first quarter, Avery Milner put the Cobras on the scoreboard first with a 37 yard touchdown run. A few minutes later, Milner again broke free, this time for 78 yard touchdown run, and the Cobras took a 13-0 lead.

Aaron Rosas kept the ground game going, first running over several Sharks defenders, and then breaking free on a 9 yard touchdown run, giving the Cobras a 20-0 first quarter lead.

In the second quarter, the Cobras showed they could also attack through the air. Logan Gabrysch connected with Peyton Prukop for a 38 yard touchdown pass that gave the Cobras a 27-0 lead.

The Cobra defense, showing that they were a force tonight too, stopped the Sharks first drive into Cobra territory when Bailey Kolb came up with an interception with just seconds left before halftime.

On the final play before halftime, Gabrysch connected with Derrick Cann for what appeared to be a short gain to send the teams into the field house, but Cann broke free and weaved through defender, running sideline to sideline until he finally found the end zone 54 yards later. After the extra point, the Cobras went into halftime with a 34-0 lead

Coming back out for the second half, the Sharks started putting a drive together, aided by several Cobras penalties, but a desperation pass on third and long was intercepted by Gabrysch at the Cobra six to return the ball to Industrial and to preserve the shutout.

On the first offensive play following the interception, Milner turned the corner on the sweep and outran all the defenders for a 94 yard touchdown run that gave Industrial a 41-0 lead.

In an attempt to not run up the score, Industrial started substituting on both sides of the ball in the fourth quarter.

The Sharks put another drive together, once again aided by Cobra penalties in the fourth quarter.  But the Cobras made four big defensive stops inside their own 11 yard line, and they regained control of the ball after a fourth and two by the Sharks came up a yard short.

On the following play, Jesse Rodriguez found Mason Maraggia for a good pass. That pass turned into a touchdown pass when Maraggia ran 98 yards to give the Cobras the final score of the night, 48-0.

After a Shark drive stalled, the Cobra offense let some of the linemen have some fun.

"I asked coach if I could (run the ball)," senior offensive lineman Stephen Bethany said. "It was fun."

Bethany led all offensive linemen in yardage, picking up 15 yards on 4 carries. Offensive lineman Dylan Hempel pitched in three yards.

But Milner was the leading rusher for the night. He finished with 11 carries for 219 yards and three touchdowns. Aaron Rosas pitched in 43 yards on the ground and a touchdown.
