Edna earns a Bi-District win against Luling

By Millie Diaz

The Bi-district round of football for Region 4 between the Edna Cowboys and Luling Eagles came down to a 35 yard field goal kicked by Ronaldo Saenz in the last seconds for an Edna win 24-21. Until then both teams were tied at 21.

In addition, Edna had a clean air game that helped them achieve their accumulated downs more easily.

To start, the team traded punts, but Edna scored first when Cowboy Kenny Haynes rushed in at the 7:17 mark in the first quarter, and Luling used their next drive to push into Edna's red zone. Eagle Wyatt Bullock ran in five yards to give Luling six points plus a good point after to tie the score at seven all early in the second quarter.

In a little over a minute Edna's quarterback Landon O'Connor kept the ball and ran in 12 yards for another touchdown. A few minutes later, Edna fumbled on a play and Luling's Dazmen Wright took advantage of the mistake and tied the score at 14 all with seven minutes left in the first half.

Although the Eagles recovered an onside kick after their touchdown and attempted to drive into the end zone at Edna's 20-yard line, the Cowboy defense held up and kept the game tied at 14.

O'Connor then sailed the ball to Cade Orsak and 56 yards later he scored Edna's third touchdown of the night. Edna led at halftime, 21-14.

In the third quarter both team's defense held strong, keeping the score unchanged.

Luling found the upper hand after an interception at their own two yard line. Bullock connected with Wright at the right moment and he ran 95 yards to tie the score at 21 all with six minutes left in the game.

Five minutes passed and the teams toggled between possession of the ball. On a 3rd and 14 with 1:11 left in the game O'Connor scrambled for 17 yards to keep the drive going that led to Saenz's field goal.

After the game he continued to clutch the ball that gave his team the Bi-district win.

The Cowboys will play Goliad in an Area round of football in Port Lavaca next Friday.
