3A Hallettsville earns first place, Edna second
The Cowboys started off their week thinking they may or may not make it into the playoffs. But due to an ineligible Rice football player the win they earned against Edna was forfeited, putting Van Vleck out of the running and giving Edna an opportunity to win another District Championship.
Hallettsville was ultimately the victor though, and won with a final score of 56-35. The undefeated Brahmas took the top seed in District 14 3A playoffs, while Edna slipped into the number two spot.
The Cowboys were forced to punt on their first offensive possession. The Brahmas came out swinging hard and dominated the first quarter with three touchdowns and solid PATs. The Brahmas led 21-0.
Hallettsville found the end zone again in the second quarter, but the Cowboys were able to respond and scored twice. The first score came when quarterback Landon O'Connor ran in from half a yard out with 2:06 left in the first half. Ronaldo Saenz kicked in the extra point. O'Connor ran in Edna's second touchdown with 1:04 left in the second quarter. After the PAT by Saenz, the halftime score was Hallettsville 28, Edna 14.
To start the second half Edna recovered a Brahma's fumble and took full advantage of the turnover when O'Connor threw a touchdown pass to Cade Orsak with 7:01 left in the third. But the Brahmas continued their lead 28-21.
The Cowboys attempted to keep the momentum on their side, but had trouble containing the Brahma offense. Hallettsville found the end zone two more times before the third quarter came to a close.
Cowboy Deion Callis caught a touchdown pass from O'Connor early in the fourth quarter, increasing Edna's score to 28 points, but the Brahmas were at 48 points by then.
Hallettsville added two more touchdowns before the Cowboys scored with a quarterback sneak by O'Connor with 3:21 left in the game. The extra point by Saenz brought the final score of the game, 56-35.
