Bernice Nordin

Bernice Charline Srubar Whitstine Nordin, of Edna passed away Sunday, Sept. 6, 2015 in Ganado, at the age of 92. She was born June 2, 1923, in Port Lavaca, to the late Charles Srubar and Albina Psencik Srubar.
Bernice worked for 48 years for Lee’s Dental Clinic for Dr. R.E. Lee, Dr. Bud Lee and Dr. Mac Lee. She was also a member of Baptist Temple of Edna. 
She is survived by her four step-children, Gary C. Nordin and his wife Alice, JoAnn Nordin Roberson and her husband Gilford, N. David Nordin, Karla Nordin Alderete and her husband Frankie; six grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
Bernice is preceded in death by her parents; first husband, O.B. Whitstine; second husband, Curtis D. Nordin; sister, Elvis Mary Srubar Milby and Charline Imogene Srubar Fife; and nephew, Charles Robert Milby.

Hugh Spring

Hugh Allan Spring, 80 of San Antonio, formerly of Lolita, was called into Glory on Monday, Sept. 7, 2015. Hugh was born  on Sept. 26, 1934 in Luling, to the late B.E. and Irby Baker Spring. Hugh was the youngest of six children.  
Hugh was well-known and respected along the Gulf Coast for his heavy equipment construction.
Hugh is survived by his brother, Roger Spring of College Station, his sister; Hanna Holquin of San Antonio; and his son, Kim and wife Debbie of Edna; daughters, Melody and husband Steve Hofer of Morganhill, Calif., and Robin and husband Preston Atkinson of San Antonio.  
He is also survived by their 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Hugh was preceded in death by his parents; wife Mary Frances Elder Spring; and three brothers; Bruce, Donald, and Jerry.

Ora Mae Butler

Ora Mae Butler, 86, passed away Sept. 2, 2015. 
Visitation will be held Friday, Sept. 11, 2015 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Cook-Butler Funeral Home, 316 Peabody Street in Edna. A second visitation will be held 10 to 11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 12 at Scruggs United Methodist Church, 313 N. Carver, Edna. The funeral service will follow. 
Interment will be in Hines Cemetery with Rev. Haywood Robinson officiating.

Lupe Pena

Lupe Pena, 70, of Edna, passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2015 in Victoria. Born in Bay City on July 18, 1945, Pena was a cook at the Frontier Restaurant in Edna.
Open visitation for Pena was Sept. 6, from 2 to 7 p.m. in the chapel of Tracy's M.J. Santellana Funeral Directors, 1402 W. Main, Edna.

Dr. Allen Okech

Dr. Allan A. Okech, 48, passed away Aug. 11, 2015 in Victoria. He was born April 4, 1967 in Western Kakamega, Kenya to Jack Green Okech and Judith Mukaui Okech.
Prior to his passing, Allan worked as an assistant professor at East Carolina University in Greenville, N.C. Department of Education Leadership.
A memorial service was held Saturday, Sept. 5, at 4 p.m. at Cook-Butler Funeral Home, 316 Peabody Edna.

Barbara James

Barbara Dean James, 72, passed away Saturday Sept. 5, 2015. She was born in Atlanta, Ga., to the late Clyde and Leonore Evans Grayless.
She was a caring "caregiver" and loved her family.
She is survived by her daughter, Peggy Lopez; son, Robert (Bobby) James; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Visitation will be Wednesday, Sept. 9 from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Slavik Funeral Home Chapel, 209 N. Allen St., Edna, and services will be Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Slavik Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in the Red Bluff Cemetery.

Allen Sisco

Allen Wayne Sisco, 66,  passed away Monday Aug. 31, 2015. He was born on Oct. 1,1948, in California to Vivian Scroggins and the late William Thomas Sisco. Wayne served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps, during the Vietnam War. He loved Jesus, his family, hunting , farming, and fishing.
  Survivors include his wife, Judy VanCleve Sisco; daughters, Lora Davis, and Rebecca Watts; sons, Richard Slaydon, and James Slaydon; sisters, Barbara Jean Sisco and Sharron Sisco; and brother, Rick Sisco. He is also survived by his 16 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Betty Ray

Betty Louise Ray, of Edna passed away Monday, Aug. 24, 2015, at the age of 85. She was born Jan. 30, 1930, in Holliday, Texas, to the late Ralph and Stella Fox Henderson.
Betty was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend who will be truly missed.
She is survived by her sons; Dr. James Ralph Ray of France, Dennis and Sandra Ray of Edna, Michael and Michelle Ray of Huntsville and Terry and Cheryl Ray of Mauriceville; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and many loving family members and friends.
Betty is preceded in death by her parents; husband, James H. Ray; one sister and one brother.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, Aug. 27, from 5 -7 p.m. in the Oaklawn Funeral Home Chapel. The funeral service will be held on Friday, Aug. 28, at 10 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Edna with the Rev. Robert Krause officiating. Burial will follow at Memory Gardens in Edna.

Gregoria Covarrubias

Gregoria R. Covarrubias, of Edna, passed away Thursday, Aug. 27, 2015 at the age of 97. She was born in McQueeney, on March 25, 1918, to the late Juan Riojas and Jesusa Ricondo Riojas.
She was a devoted housewife for many years. Gregoria touched the hearts of everyone who knew her. She was also a loving aunt, sister and friend who will be missed dearly.
Gregoria is survived by her loving nieces and nephews, Laura Covarrubias Lopez and Ray Herrera Jr., Irene De Los Santos and Robert, Johnny Martinez, Joe Covarrubias and Donna, Alonzo Covarrubias and Edward Covarrubias and Stephanie.
Gregoria is preceded in death by her parents; husband of 71 years, Andrew Covarrubias; eight brothers and sisters.

Ronald Denker

Ronald Wayne Denker, 67 passed away on Saturday, Aug. 22, 2015. He was born in Gonzales on April 28, 1948 to the late Wilbert Henry and Elva Ella Boldt Denker.
On March 26, 2015 Ron was diagnosed with cancer and fought a hard and courageous battle for 5 short months. Ron graduated from Gonzales High School in 1966. He was honorably discharged from the Cuero National Guard. Ron retired after 40 plus years from the Alcoa plant in Point Comfort.
Ron married the love of his life, Linda Dian Frederick, on June 1, 1969. They had 46 beautiful years together. They started each morning enjoying a cup of coffee on the porch of their country home. After ending a hard day's work, back to the porch Ron went for a refreshing libation.
