Tropical Storm Bill leaves areas of county under water

Tropical Storm Bill has dumped inches of water on Jackson County and many streets and roads are flooded and impassable.
In the city of Ganado, Mayor Clinton Tegeler has asked that people stay off the streets due to the flooding. There are reports of more than 12 inches of rain falling there in the past 12 hours. Tegeler said homes and businesses are getting water in them when vehicles drive past. It is reported that Devers Creek Park is under water.
Streets in Edna are flooded as well, with reports of more than 8 inches falling in some areas. Dry Creek is over its banks and the Children’s Park on Pumphrey is flooded. The Hwy. 59 exit by the post office was also under water.
In the county, we have reports of areas of Hwy. 111 that are flooded. CR 246 at FM 2982 is under water, as is CR 1157. CR 112 by Lost Bridge is also closed. We will be updating information as it becomes available.

Bridal gowns given new life

The Texana Museum in Edna was host to a bridal showcase on June 11. Seven bridal gowns were featured, dating back to 1951.

Jeanette Stafford, Joyce Jarratt, Maxine Price, and Kaitlen Eckmann were responsible for the showcase. Price says the women found inspiration in a magazine and along with their creative minds, made the décor from household items.

Refreshments were served, arranged like what you would see at a wedding reception. “We wanted it to be as if you are coming to the reception,” says Stafford. Jarratt baked the wedding cake and Stafford made the punch with her “secret family recipe.”

Price says the idea sprung from the “Here Comes the Brides” showcase at the Texana Center for the Arts, hosted at the same time. “We piggybacked on the Art Center’s plan,” says Price, “we like to call it the ‘Here Comes the Brides Tour’.”

1-10 closed between Sealy and Waller County

The Texas Department of Transportation has closed I-10 in both directions Wednesday afternoon after an 18-wheeler collided with and damaged an overpass column at mile marker 725 between Sealy and the Waller County line.

All interstate traffic in both directions is being diverted to the frontage roads until TxDOT engineers can assess the damage to the bridge column that was struck. Drivers can anticipate lengthy delays in this area.

It is unknown how long the interstate will be closed, though we are hoping to reopen the highway to traffic later this afternoon or evening. Please monitor DriveTexas.org and the Yoakum District Twitter feed for the latest updates.

All inquiries regarding the wreck investigation should be made to your appropriate DPS PIO.
