Landfall imminent for Tropical Storm Bill
Submitted by jcht2010 on
Landfall of Tropical Storm Bill is imminent, and some coastal counties are already seeing high winds and heavy rains.
Most counties can expect around 4-8 inches of rain with up to 10 inches in some areas, and winds of 30-50 mph, although isolated gusts of up to 60 mph have been reported. A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for Jackson and surrounding counties now.
South Texas has seen its share of rain in recent weeks, and flooding remains the principal threat. Some areas in Bay City are already seeing road flooding in low spots, and Calhoun county has experienced loss of power.
The chance of isolated tornadoes has been raised form 2% to 5%, but the EOC stressed that floods and winds are the biggest threat to the coastal area now.
One concern is South Texas rivers, such as the Trinity and Brazos rivers, which have already exceeded their banks because of recent rainstorms. The Emergency Operations Center said they will monitor rivers throughout the week, even after Bill has passed.
Rain is expected to continue through Wednesday, and a flash flood watch is in effect until 6 p.m. Wednesday evening.
Jackson County Emergency Management officials are monitoring the storm closely, and said they have planned provisions for shelter if needed, although it doesn’t appear at this time that they will be necessary.
Another webinar with the EOC is scheduled for 4 p.m. Tuesday.
