Edna holds off Hallettsville 28-21 to advance to state semifinals

By Jeremy Shapiro
Special to the Herald-Tribune

ROSENBERG At the end of an emotional week and a hard-fought game against a tough opponent, the Edna High School coaches just asked for two more first downs.

The Cowboys jumped ahead of Hallettsville 28-0 Friday in a Class 3A, Division 1 state quarterfinal game at Traylor Stadium in Rosenberg. But the Brahmas had whittled the lead down to 28-21 with 2:40 left on the clock.

The Cowboys (9-5) figured if they could just get two more first downs, Hallettsville would never see the ball. Edna’s quarterback Landon O’Connor got one of them on a 12-yard run. The Cowboys didn’t get that second one, but they did get rid of all but 13 seconds on the clock before the Brahmas got the ball back.

Cowboys score 50 points for #50, take Regionals

by Melissa and Richie Fojtik
The Edna Cowboys traveled to New Braunfels Canyon Stadium on Nov. 29 to take on the Ingram Tom Moore Warriors in the Regional round of the playoffs and won, 50-28.
The Cowboys entered the game with heavy hearts in what would prove to be one of the most emotional games they would play in their high school football careers. They dedicated the game to their fallen teammate, #50 Noah Ortiz.
Senior Dylan Kallus said at the beginning of the game it was emotional, but once they got more into the game they really started going. “It felt like Noah was there with us, especially when we looked at the scoreboard and saw the 50,” he said. “Coach said it was up to us whether or not we wanted to kick the extra point, and we missed it to keep the score at 50 for Noah.”
Coach Josh Lovelady said the players could not have responded better after the tragedy that occurred. “They played their hearts out,” he said.

Edna continues playoff journey

by Millie Diaz    The Edna Cowboys were victorious again at Memorial Stadium in Victoria against the Goliad Tigers with a final score of 21-14, and earned the title of Area champs in Conference  3A-D1 Region 4. Without a doubt, the game was filled with cheers, excitement and everything else that's associated with a Friday night football game.
Athletic Director and Head Coach Huey Chancellor said the team gave a great effort. “It was a challenge to play a highly ranked team, but we played a clean game and there were no turnovers and no dropped balls,” he said. “It was a fun game to be in and a fun game to coach. Not to mention a fun game to win.”

A Cowboy not to be forgotten

Sophomore Noah Ortiz is now the driving force and the biggest reason to win behind the Edna Cowboys and their playoff game this Saturday, Nov. 29.
Football players, bandmates, coaches and teachers posted on Ortiz’s facebook page and shared with each other about what kind of impact Ortiz had made in their lives.
Athletic Director Huey Chancellor said when he started at the school last March, defensive tackle Ortiz was an athlete he recognized to be a hard worker. “When you’re new, you don’t know the backgrounds of any of these kids and Ortiz caught my eye. I was impressed with his mindset that he wanted to be a good player and he was willing to work to do it,” he said. “As the season went on I got to know him a little more as a person and he was a quality young man and a team player, he was a fun kid to coach, he loved the Edna Cowboys and was proud to be a part of the team this year.”
