Raking in the wins

The 2015 LaWard 4-H Rifle members competed in a tournament from Feb. 27-28, at the shooting sports building. Shown are the members with their awards from the tournament. Edna tennis teams place

    The Edna junior varsity and varsity tennis teams competed in a Refugio tournament from March 5-6.
    In the boys doubles, team Carlos Romero and Jacob Jalomo placed 1st by beating Tilden 8-4, Edna’s John Crow and Corey Siecko 8-6, and Tivoli 8-6. Team Tristan Kucera and Mauro Segundo placed 3rd by beating Skidmore 8-1, Woodsboro 8-0, and losing to Tivoli 5-8 and Edna’s Crow and Siecko 8-2.
    Crow and Siecko beat Skidmore 8-5 and lost to Edna’s Romero and Jalomo and Kucera and Segundo. Team Shane Darilek and Orlando Macias lost to Tivoli 0-8 and beat Woodsboro 8-4.
    In the girls doubles, team Jessica Granados and Aaliyah Thompson lost to Tivoli 0-8, and beat Edna’s team Laura Garcia and Zithlali Calzada 8-5. Garcia and Calzada lost to Refugio 4-8 and to Edna’s team.
    In the mixed category, team Daniel Silva and Amber Palacios lost to Refugio 1-8 and beat Woodsboro 8-5.

Cobra softball prepares for district

    The Industrial Cobra softball team played the St. Paul Cardinals on March 3 and won 9-5.
    Coach Ted Malek said the girls did a good job, and although they have some things to work on, they did well at working towards a common goal. “To score in every inning, that’s the goal,” he said.
    Good catches were made by Reagan Doyle and Katie Sparkman, and catcher Kasi Bethke scored on pitcher Landry Mikulec's hit, and Sparkman got a walk. Skylar Chreene ran in another point for Mikulec, and the score was 2-2 at the end of the first.
    Reagan Gasch scored one  in the second inning, and Sparkman scored on Lexey Mikulec's hit and brought the score to 3-2 in the Cobra's favor.
    The Cardinals had a lead until Chreene scored on Doyle's hit and tied the game 5-5. Bethke hit a double and brought in Cierra Borak and Doyle, and Landry hit a single that brought in Bethke. Jillian Jones then hit a ball that brought in Landry, making the score 9-5.

Maidens keep up the hard work

    The Ganado Maidens competed in a Rosenburg tournament from March 5-7. They first played Lamar and lost 0-1, Taylor Mirelez had the only hit and stole a base. Cheyenne Galindo pitched, and had six hits, one run, a walk and four strikeouts.
    The Maidens then played Terry and won 10-0. Alexis Mojica, Hannah Janssen, Mirelez and Galindo each had two hits, while Delaney Workman and Maddie Workmon had one hit apiece. Mojica, Workman and Workmon had two runs each, and Janssen, Mirelez, Haylie Hicks and Kylie Hicks each had a run. Mojica had five runs batted in, Janssen had two runs batted in, while Mirelez, and H. Hicks had a run batted in.
    Mojica had a homerun, Mirelez had a triple, and Workmon, H. Hicks, Mojica, Sarah Novak and Mirelez each stole a base. Galindo pitched the game, had one homerun and three strikeouts.

Cobras ground the Cardinals

The Industrial Cobras softball team played at home against the St. Paul Cardinals and won, 9-5. Coach Ted Malek said the girls did a good job, and although they have some things to work on, they did well at working towards a common goal.

"To score in every inning, that's the goal," he said. Although the Cobras didn't do that, they definitely made up for it in the last inning.

St. Paul started out the game scoring two in the first inning, and good catches by Reagan Doyle and Katie Sparkman helped end the Cardinal half of the inning. Catcher Kasi Bethke scored on pitcher Landry Mikulec's hit, and Sparkman got a walk. Skylar Chreene ran in another point for Mikulec, and the score was 2-2 at the end of the first inning.

Edna tennis

Edna Cowboy Hunter Green was named the Consolation Champion at the Shiner tennis tournament on Feb. 21. He lost to LaGrange 2-8, beat Shiner 6-3, and beat Industrial 6-0.

‘Girls play Poth

    The Edna Cowgirls lost to the Poth Pirates in Goliad on Feb. 16 in the Bi-District basketball playoffs with a final score of 30-52.
    Coach Brett Nidey said the team played hard that night, but their shots were not falling in. "We have seven coming back for next year and we will be ready to get after it again," he said.
    The score at the end of the first quarter was 7-15 in Poth's favor, and Edna came back to score more in the second quarter, but it wasn't enough to get them over the top. At halftime, Poth was up by seven points.
    The third quarter proved more difficult for both of the teams, neither scored in the double digits. Poth added nine points and Edna three, with a score of 22-35. In the fourth quarter, Poth pushed through and added 17 more points to their score, while Edna only added eight, putting the final score at 30-52 in Poth's favor.

Industrial Cobras lose to Jarrell

    The Industrial Cobras (23-13) played the Jarrell Cougars in Bi-District matchup on Feb. 16, but lost with a score of 36-73. Jarrell was out to play that night, and had the upper hand throughout the game.
    “Jarrell was a very offensively sound team, and they missed very few shots,” said Coach Valerie Smith. “My girls fought hard and never gave up.”
    By halftime, Jarrell was up over 20 points, and the Cobras had only scored 18 points. Jarrell had 40 points. The game continued hard, and the Cobras couldn't pull out a win.
    Kelsey VanPelt scored 13 points with two three-pointers, Sarah Kusak had seven points, Reagan Doyle score four points, and Sabrina Emiliano scored three points with a three-pointer. Skylar Chreene scored three points, Savhannah Kitchens scored three points, Taylor McGinnis had two points, and Cassidy High scored a point.

Edna, Industrial and Ganado varsity and JV track meet results

    Edna High School hosted a track meet on Feb. 20. The Edna Cowgirls tied with Goliad, they won the flip and took first place, the Industrial Cobras placed 7th. The Edna Cowboys placed 5th, and Industrial placed 2nd.
    The Ganado track teams attended a Weimar track meet. The Varsity boys placed 5th, and the varsity girls placed 5th as well.

Cobras fang the Cowboys

The Industrial Cobras stood up to the Cowboys in a basketball game and won with a final score of 50-34.

"My guys are good," Cobra Coach Rusty Roe said proudly. "They play well together, they're a good team, they like each other, they play hard, and they like to get after it."

"Nothing worked out this evening, especially defensively," said Edna Coach Chad Hartley. "We couldn't score. We will probably play Goliad on Monday in Bloomington, but I don't know when yet."

Three 'Boys put numbers on the board in the first quarter: Travis Farquhar put away the first three-pointer of the game, Matt White and Landon Myers dropped in a couple of free throws. Many shots were attempted by the 'Boys, but not a lot of shots were making it into the basket.
