Annie Mae Bures

Annie Mae Bures, 82 of Ganado passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2014,  surrounded by her children and loving family. Annie was born Sept. 18, 1932 in Fayetteville to the late Albert and Millie Rozner Supak.
    A mother of 12  children, Annie was a loving and caring homemaker, a great cook and baker. Annie was a lifelong member of the Assumption BVM Catholic Church of Ganado, and also was a lifelong member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW, Annie was also awarded the 50 year pin for her service and dedication to the Catholic Daughters.
    She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Emil V. Bures, Jr. and sons: Robert Lee (Cowboy) Bures, Emil (Fido) V Bures III, Michael Anthony Bures and daughter Patricia Ann Bures.

Esther Irene Lewis

    Esther Irene Lewis, of Edna, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2014 at the age of 90.  She was born in El Campo on March 7, 1924, to the late Frank and Naomi Swenson Danielson.
    Irene worked as a newspaper carrier for many years before she retired, she was a loving mother, grandmother and friend who will be missed dearly.
    Irene is survived by her daughter, Mary Catherine Lewis of Edna; sons, James Ray Lewis (Toni) of Edna and Daniel Thomas Lewis (Ruth) of Macomb, Ill.; grandchildren, Jamie (Matthew) Sulak, Forrest (Raquel) Lewis, Paul Powell, Phillip Powell and Rebecca Powell and four great-grandchildren.

Jeffrey Matt Cox

    Jeffrey “Matt” Cox, passed away Saturday, Oct. 18, 2014 in Corpus Christi. He was born on Oct. 15, 1962 in Jourdanton to Jimmie and Doris Cox.
    Matt graduated from Bishop High School and retired from the Department of Transportation this year. He was a member of the St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Corpus Christi.
    He is preceded in death by his father, Jimmie Cox.
    He is survived by his loving wife, Lori Cox; son, Garrett Cox; daughter, Briana Cox all of Corpus Christi; and mother, Doris Cox of Riviera.
    Visitation will be held Wednesday, Oct. 22 from 5 to 9 p.m. at Charlie Marshall Funeral Home in Rockport. Mass will be celebrated Thursday, Oct. 23 at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Rockport. Interment will follow at the Rockport Cemetery in Rockport.

Ludy Cadwell

Ludy McDonald Cadwell, passed away on Sunday, Oct. 20, 2014 at the age of 99, while at the Hillje Catholic Czech Home for the aged. She was born in Navidad (Morales), Texas on Nov. 25, 1914 to Wendall and Ruth Cosper McDonald. Woodrow Wilson was President of the U.S.A. and World War I had just begun. Her home was lighted by kerosene lamps, no radio, TV, nor computers or phones and cell phones.   
    Ludy, a lady full of laughter, loved the Lord Jesus Christ and her extended family. She graced this earth with her presence for 99 years. She cherished family gatherings in Morales at the McDonald farm and later on at her home. She loved fiddling contests and attended whenever and as much as she could always laughing, clapping and enjoying herself as well as the contestants.

Gladys Bennett

    Gladys Marie (Hirsch) Bennett of Ganado went to be with the Lord on Saturday, Oct. 18, 2014 at the age of 85. She was born Sept. 14, 1929 in Huffsmith, to Albert and Louise (Vogt ) Hirsch. She married J.R. Bennett on Sept. 27,1947. They were married 67 years. Gladys was a devoted wife and mother, taking great pride in her home and yard.
    Gladys was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Irvin and Maxie Hirsch, and her sister, Ruby Martens. 
    Gladys is survived by her husband J.R. Bennett, her children, Howard ( Annette )Bennett, LaVerne ( Mike) Konarik, Judy (Bennie) Dunbar and Nelda ( Geren) Roecker. Gladys is also survived by her eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
    Visitation will be Monday, Oct. 20 from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Ganado Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Tuesday, Oct. 21 at 10:30 a.m. at the St. James Lutheran Church in Ganado, with Rev. Chris Heinold officiating. Interment will be in the Ganado Cemetery.

Dalton Chase

    Dalton Chase, 76, passed away on Thursday, October 9, 2014. A former resident of Baltimore, Maryland, professional football player, truck driver and steel mill worker, Mr. Chase was also a veteran of the United States Army.
    Funeral services were held Thursday, Oct. 16 at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Tracy's M.J. Santellana Funeral Directors, 1402 W. Main in Edna. Burial was in Sayles Cemetery, Edna.

Ed Duncan

    If you look up the word 'Southern Gentleman' you are bound to find a picture of Ed Duncan. Those whose lives that were touched by this great man, could not have helped but love and respect him.
    He was born in Salt Gap, Texas July 16, 1924 where he attended grade school. He graduated from nearby Melvin High School. After graduating from engineering school, Ed joined the Merchant Marines and served his country during World War II.
    He married DeLois See in 1946 and moved to Ganado where he owned and operated his own service station before accepting a master plumber position at Alcoa.
    Mr. Duncan personally founded and funded the Ganado Little League and built their first baseball field. Ed also served on the Ganado ISD school board a number of years and was business manager of Ganado ISD for over 30 years.
    Ed was a very giving person who contributed to many charities and served his church for many years.

Dorothy Zacek

Beloved wife, mother, and “Nanny,” Dorothy Gregory Zacek, 80, passed peacefully from this world into her heavenly home on Wednesday, Sept.10, 2014, surrounded by her family. Dorothy was born in Edna to Johnny and Annabelle Gregory on Aug. 13, 1934. She graduated from Edna High School and then married the love of her life, Irvin Zacek, on Nov. 20, 1952. She was a homemaker.
    Survivors include her husband of almost 62 years, Irvin; daughter, Donna Thomson (Will); son, Johnny Zacek (Dinah); grandchildren, Jaime Thomson, Jackie Meiste (Scot), Amy Cook (Stephen), Michelle Bell (David), Jennifer Zacek, and six great-grandchildren.
    She was preceded in death by her parents; and sister Doris Melton.   
A memorial service was held at Palm’s Funeral home in Angleton on Sept. 13, at 3 p.m. with Deacon Gerald Peltier officiating.

    Frances Rose Strauss, 3rd generation citizen of Ganado, daughter of Annie Skyrla Strauss and Albert Joseph Strauss passed away on Oct. 3, 2014.

Ruth Geldert

    Ruth Adair Dwigans Geldert, age 97, of San Jose, Calif. passed away on Oct. 7, 2014.  She was born on March 12, 1917 in Ganado to Forrest W. and Emma B. Payne Dwigans. Ruth was a 1937 graduate of Rice University. She married fellow Rice graduate, William John Carlyle Geldert, originally of Halifax, Nova Scotia, on Oct. 3, 1941 in Houston. They had one daughter, Judith Ann Geldert (Munnerlyn). 
    Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, U.S. Army Captain Geldert, of the Combat Command B, 3rd Armored Division, who was killed in battle in Brittany on Aug. 2, 1944.  She also was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Forrest P. Dwigans, his wife Lorraine, and their son Forrest Michael Dwigans.
