Dale Pennington

    Our beloved Dale Pennington, 75, passed from this life July 10, 2014. He was born March 18, 1939, in Stamford and grew up on a cotton farm in Haskell, where he developed his affinity for agriculture.
    Dale graduated from Texas A&M University in 1961 and was commissioned into the U.S. Army and held the rank of captain. Dale returned to Texas A&M, where he earned his Ph.D. in soil chemistry. Dale served as assistant county agent and 4-H leader in Jackson County; Extension assistant soil chemist in College Station; Extension area agronomist of Districts 12 and14 in Weslaco; Extension soil chemist of Districts 1, 2, 3, 6 and 7 in Lubbock; and Extension soil chemist in College Station.
    He developed two computer diagnostic programs, STANAS and WATERS, for soil and water recommendations. He also conducted research on hydroponics, which has been used in the Mars space project.

Guadalupe Romero Jr.

Guadalupe Romero Jr., 56 passed away July 13, 2014.
    He is preceded In death by his parents father, Guadalupe Romero Sr., and mother Cecilia De La Garza Romero.
    He is survived by his loving sister Rosario Delgado, his loving cousins and friends.
    Visitation and a prayer service were at Faith Family Church in Victoria, Thursday, July 17.

Paulino Verver

    Paulino 'Weno' Dovalina Verver, of Edna, passed away Monday, July 14, 2014 at the age of 82. He was born in Palacios on Sept. 2, 1931, to the late Fermin and Otilia Dovalina Verver.
    Paulino worked as a heavy equipment operator for many years from where he retired. Paulino was very proud to serve in the Korean War before his honorable discharge. He was a loving brother, uncle and friend who will be dearly missed.
    Paulino is survived by his sisters, Lilia Verver of Edna, Asusena Martinez of Austin, and Isabel Verver De La Vega and husband Hank of Las Vegas, Nev.; brothers, Joe Verver of Ganado, Margarito Verver and wife Leonora of Edna; nephew, Fermin Verver and wife Susie of Victoria and numerous nieces and nephews.
    Paulino is preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Macaria Alanis, Andrea Alvarez, and Maclovia De La Garza; and brothers, Pablo Verver, Indalecio Verver and Fancisco Dovalina Verver.

Rose Marie Fondon

    Rose Marie Gabrysch Fondon of Fort Worth, passed away Wed. July 2, 2014 at the age of 80. She was born Nov.1, 1933 in Edna to the late Alfred and Lena Gabrysch.
    She is survived by daughter Donna Fondon Bosworth and husband Dwight of Southlake, sons Eddie Fondon and wife Belinda of Dublin, and Kenny Fondon of Fort Worth; four sisters, Mary Louise Hasdorff of Moulton, Geraldine Etlinger and husband, Emmitt of Ganado, Patsy Juroska of Seguin, and Judy Babbitt and husband, Garvin of Avoca, Iowa; two brothers, Wayne Gabrysch and wife Agnes of Edna, and Phil Gabrysch of Victoria.
    She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren, one granddaughter, and three grandsons, and numerous nieces and nephews.
    She is preceded in death by a young son, Allen Fondon.
    Funeral services and burial were held Monday, July 7 in Fort Worth under the direction of Laurel Land Funeral Home.

Irene Psencik

    Irene Psencik, 81, died July 13, 2014. She was born in Ganado on June 22,1933 to the late Joseph and Julia Dybala Sulak and was a lifelong resident of Ganado.
    A devout Catholic, she belonged to the Assumption Catholic Church where she was a member of the Altar Society and KJZT Society #43. She was the former co-owner of the Psencik Funeral Home in Ganado, now the Ganado Funeral Home. Irene was an avid quilter, an ardent Scrabble player and loved to bake. Her grand kids loved her homemade bread, strudels and poppy-seed rolls.
    She is survived by her loving children, Cindy (David) Childs, Judy Nyegaard, Clara( Rick) Schaefer, Janie (Pat) Tumlinson, Trisha (Dave) Hope, and Greg Psencik; 12 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren; her sisters, Annie Moore, Mary Jane Rod and Maxine Wilson; brothers, Lad Sulak, Bernard (Bob) Sulak and J.D. Sulak.

Patsy Zajicek Kubala

    Patsy Zajicek Kubala, 71, of Ganado passed away on July 7,2014. She was born on July 26, 1942 to the late Adolph and Elsie Schomburg  Zajicek. Patsy was retired from Edna ISD.   
    Patsy is survived by her two children, Steven (wife Tessie) Kubala of Ganado and Lisa Kubala of Temple. Also surviving are nieces Rhonda Gerdes, Sherrie Supak, of Ganado,  Malinda Rochl of Louise and Susan Webel of Roundrock, and nephews; Charles Zajicek of Edna and Larry Glaze of Ganado.
    She is preceded in death by her parents Adolph and Elsie, her husband, John Kubala, her twin sister, Peggy Zajicek Glaze and her brother Adolph Zajicek, Jr.
    Visitation will be held at the Ganado Funeral Home on Wednesday July 9 from 5 to 7 p.m. Funeral services will Thursday July 10 at 10 a.m. at the St. James Lutheran Church, with Rev. Chris Heinold officiating. Interment will follow in the Ganado Cemetery.

Mary E. Holmes

    Mary E. Holmes, 71, of Angelton, died Monday, June 9, 2014 in Ganado. She was born Dec. 8, 1942 in Angleton to Joseph E. Jenkins and Doris Jenkins.
    She is survived by her husband Fyrel “Sonny” Holmes of Edna; sons Russell Holmes and wife Jennifer of Granbury and Jeseph Holmes of Edna; daughters pat Kimbro and husband Michael, and Tina Holmes of Edna; brothers, Danny Jenkins and Herbert Jenkins, both of Inez; and sister Wanda Tompkins and husband George of Edna; and 12 grandchildren, Kristen, Ryan, Jason, Sabrina, Hannah, Emily, Joey, Summer, Ethan, and Releigh.
    She was preceded in death by her parents.
    Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 13 at First Assembly of God, 115 W. Cypress, Edna with Rev. David Murff and Rev. George Tompkins officiating. Interment will follow in Red Bluff Cemetery, Lolita.

Margie Rackley

    Margie Rackley, 75, of Edna, died Wednesday, July 2, 2014 in Victoria. She was born Oct. 10, 1938 in Dallas to Marion W. and Georgia Mae Tucker.
    She is survived by daughters Cathy Todd and husband Bill of Deer Park, Paula Rytter and husband Jeff of Houston, Lauren Flake and husband Ronnie of Edna, Carla Rackley of Edna; 15 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
    She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Kay Emory Rackley; parents; and four brothers.
    Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, July 10 at Forest Park East Funeral Home in Webster. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 11 at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Forest Park East Cemetery.
    Pallbearers will be her grandsons.
    Arrangements under the direction of Forest Park East Funeral Home, Webster, 281-332-3111.

George Settles

    George M. Settles, of Edna, passed away Wednesday, July 2, 2014, at the age of 75.  He was born Sept. 27, 1938, in Jacksonville, Ill., to the late Elmo Howard and Lois Elanie Settles.
    George served in the United States Army. He retired from Mobil Chemical after 35 years. He was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather and he will be missed dearly.
    He is survived by his wife Frances M. Vasquez; daughters Linda Settles of Temple and April Phillips of South Texas; step-daughter Michelle Guzman; step-sons John Vasquez of Temple and Carlos Vasquez of Wisconsin; sisters Mary Moore of San Antonio and Esther Settles of Illinois; brother Charles Settles of Illinois; two granddaughters; and umerous step-grandchildren.
    George is preceded in death by his parents; daughter Brenda Settles; grandson David Joseph Smith; and brother Eddie Joe Settles.

Charlie Berryhill

    Charlie Berryhill, 83, of Ladonia died Monday, June 30, 2014 at Red River Regional Hospital in Bonham. Berryhill was born on Feb. 27, 1931 in Edna to Oscar O’Neal and Ida Theresa Hollub Berryhill.
    After high school, he joined the Army and became a helicopter pilot. He married Ronda Ann Knox in the military chapel in Fort Hood on Jan. 15, 1969. He served 36 years in the Army and retired as the highest ranking warrant officer of the Army. During his career he proudly served in the Vietnam War as a helicopter pilot. Berry was awarded several decorations including 27 air medals, the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Legion of Merit.
