City officials frustrated over lack of action

By Chris Lundstrom, publisher/editor
The railroad crossing on Hwy. 172 in Ganado will finally get repaired and it is none too soon for the mayor and police chief.
The crossing is on the busiest street which goes through the center of town. According to Mayor Clinton Tegeler, the crossing has been a problem since Kansas City Southern installed it in 2009.
“It was never installed correctly,” Tegeler said. “Right after they [KCS] installed it they told us once it was in they wouldn’t have to do anything to it for 30 years.”
The concrete pads that line the tracks quickly deteriorated after the crossing was installed. KCS used wooden pads to replace the concrete, as evidenced by the discarded pieces that lay alongside the tracks.
Ganado Police Chief Rodney Roberson shares Tegeler’s concerns.
“The tracks are not stable. They just bounce when traffic goes over them,” he said.

New technology helps kids learn

The Industrial Independent School District Board of Trustees discussed technological improvements at IISD campuses during its Feb. 10 regular board meeting.
Kelly Kisiah, district dyslexia coordinator, shared with trustees a new website/software called Bookshare. Bookshare is an accessible online library of digital books for people with print disabilities. It operates under an exception to U.S. copyright law which allows copyrighted digital books to be made available to people with qualifying disabilities.
“We have been actively looking for new technology that will help our students,” Kisiah said. “Our students use audio books. We download those. This is a new one that we came across. It is called Bookshare and this is accessible to students with a learning disability that impacts reading.”
