Wilma Cherry

Wilma G. Cherry
    Wilma G. (Jean) Cherry, of Ganado, passed away on June 19, 2014. She was born on Nov. 23, 1932.
    She is survived by children James K. Cherry, Frances C. Lewis, Carla C. Koncaba and Ben L. Cherry; eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
    She is preceded in death by her husband James C. Cherry.
    In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Hospice of South Texas.

Michael Girrard Tipton

    Michael “Mike” Girrard Tipton, 63, of Edna, died Wednesday, June 18, 2014. He was born March 17, 1951 in Arenosa to Mildred Tipton and the late Artie Tipton. Mike worked at the West Ranch in Vanderbilt for 38 years.
    Mike was a hard worker and enjoyed spending time with his wife, kids and grandchildren. He was admired for being a kind, caring and giving person, always putting others’ needs before his own. Mike enjoyed taking his nephews, Lane Tipton, Jake Tipton, Lance Tipton and Matthew Volkmer to work with him, building fence, working cattle and doing other handyman work, teaching them “his way” of doing things. He was loved by so many and will be greatly missed. He is gone but our memories of him will live on in remembering his sense of humor, his quotes about life, and his ability to make the best of what life handed him.

Ronald "Buddy" Anders

Ronald Mark (Buddy) Anders died on June 15, 2014.
    He was born in Ganado to the late Jack and Dorthy Anders. Employed at Alcoa for 33 years, he then retired and went to work with HESCO. Buddy was employed there until his auto accident. He served as an Elder in the Community Presbyterian Church in Vanderbilt. Buddy was a graduate of Industrial High School and TSTI in Waco. He married his high school sweetheart and together they had three children that were his pride and joy. Buddy was a devoted husband and father. He will be remembered for his big smile, friendliness, and willingness to help others. God called Buddy home on Father’s Day; this was a fitting end to the life of a man that dedicated a lifetime to serving his family.

John Hicks

    John W. (Pat) Hicks, 82, formerly of Ganado, passed away Monday, June 2, 2014. He was born Nov. 27, 1931 to the late Martin and Myrtle Sephens Hicks.
    Pat is survived by his daughters Tenia Hicks and Tammy (husband Glen) Peek; sister Vivian Koenig; grandchildren Jacob Peek, Shelby Hicks and Kelsey Hicks and great-grandchildren, Aubrie and Case Callier.
    Pat is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Adella Simicek Hicks, sisters, Linda LeHew, Joann McTaggart and
brothers, Brian (BW) Hicks, Billy Hicks, and granddaughter, Stacy Perritt.
    Visitation will be Thursday June 5 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Ganado Funeral Home. Graveside services will be Friday, June 6 at 10 a.m. at the Assumption Catholic Cemetery with Rev. Shannon Bowdion officiating.

Doris Summers

Doris Estell Dial Summers, 84, passed peacefully from this life at Elmcroft Assisted Living Facility, Lake Jackson, Sunday June 1, 2014. She was born Aug. 4, 1929, to the late Sie and Emma Jetton Dial of Texana.
    Doris married Harold Lloyd Summers on Nov. 17, 1949. Doris lived a full life traveling to and living in several U.S. states and foreign countries. She loved and was loved by her immediate family, nieces, nephews, and a myriad of friends.
    Doris is survived by her two sons, Wesley Summers of Kerrville, and Quincy Summers of Los Angeles, Calif; three grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.
    Graveside services were held Tuesday, June 3 at 2 p.m., at Memory Gardens of Edna, with Rev. Robert Krause officiating, where she will be laid to rest, in memory, beside Harold.
    The family suggests memorial contributions be sent to a special donation to your church or local charity in Doris's name.

Vernon Davis

    Vernon Bradford Davis, 70, of Edna, died Friday, May 23, 2014 in Houston. He was born Sept. 26, 1943 in Edna to the late Burt and Agnes Quinn Davis.
    He was a welder.
    He is survived by his daughter, Lisa Davis of Edna; son Roy Eddie Davis of Edna, brothers Freddy Davis of Orangeville, Calif., J.W. Davis of Lake McQueeny; sisters Dorothy Tilley of Palestine, and Florence Sappington of Orangeville, Calif.; five grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.   
    He was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly Davis, son Robert Davis, brothers Michael Davis, Benny Davis, and sister Wilma Webel.
    A memorial service will be held at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Edna on Wednesday, June 4 at 10 a.m. with Rev. George Tompkins offiating.
    A reception will be held at the Ganado American Legion Hall immediately following the service.

Trudy Jennings

    Trudy Jennings, 89, of Alvin, passed away Saturday, May 24, 2014, in Houston. Trudy was born on May 14, 1925 in Goliad.  She was a homemaker, and a business owner in the Cattleman Western Store of Alvin, and was a member of Adoue  St. Church of Christ.
    Trudy is preceded in death by her husband, Albert Jennings, parents, Elizabeth and Cephas E. Miller, son David Jennings, sisters, Elizabeth Lamberth and Dorothy Faye Miller.

Refugia Lopez

    Refugia G. Lopez, 90 of Edna passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 22, 2014. She was born Aug. 1,1923 in Goliad to the late Merced Garcia and Celia Longoria Garcia. She was a homemaker loving mother and grandmother.
    She is survived by sons Jesse (Janie) Lopez, Jimmy (Lupe) Lopez, and Ruben Lopez; eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
    She was preceded in death by parents Merced Garcia and Celia Longoria Garcia; husband Jesus Lopez Sr.; brother Henry Garcia; and sisters Janie Cano annd Chrisanta Perez.
    Visitation was from 7 to 8 p.m. with a rosary at 7 p.m., May 23 at Slavik Funeral Home in Edna. Services were Saturday May 24, at 2:30 p.m. at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Edna, with the Rev. Michael Petering officiating.
    Services are under the direction of Slavik Funeral Home, 209 N. Allen St., Edna, 361-782-2152.

Guadalupe Arriaga

    Guadalupe Arriaga Jr., 51, passed away on May 12, 2014.
    Guadalupe is survived by his sons Allen Micheal and Mark Anthony Arriaga; sisters, Teresa Hysquierdo and Maria Gaona; brothers Michael and Johnny Coronado; and four grandchildren.
    He is preceded in death by his parents Guadalupe and Martina Arriaga Sr., and a brother Jerry Molina.
    Visitation will be Wednesday May 14 at Ganado Funeral Home from 5-8 p.m. with a rosary at 7 p.m. Services will be at Assumption Catholic Church on May 15 at 11 a.m., with Rev. Michael Lyons officiating. Burial will follow at Assumption Catholic Cemetery.
    Pallbearers will be Robert Hysquierdo, Adam Tristan, Toby Ortiz, Robert Mendez Jr., Joseph Mendez, Roger Conde, Richard Arriaga. Honorary pallbearers are Allen M. Arriaga, Laythan Arriaga, Abigail Arriaga, and Alexis Arriaga.
    Services are under the direction of Ganado Funeral Home, 800 S. 3rd St., Ganado, 361-771-2120.
