Early morning crash victim identified

An Edna woman who died in a Victoria County wreck has been identified as 29-year-old Michelle Raybon. Shortly before 7 a.m. on Dec. 16, Raybon’s SUV struck the back of a Stiles 18-wheeler on Hwy 59 Northbound.
What exactly happened to cause Raybon's vehicle to hit the truck is unknown, according to Detective Tanya Brown, Victoria Police Department’s Public Information Officer.
Brown said both vehicles were traveling north on Hwy. 59 when Raybon’s Hyundai rear-ended the 18-wheeler.
Raybon was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the 18 wheeler was not injured and a commercial inspection of the truck by Texas Department of Public Safety revealed zero violations. No charges were filed related to the crash.
Raybon was a 2005 graduate of Edna High School and a third grade teacher at Edna Elementary School.

Rosa Sledge performs at Ganem’s Garage gathering

Trey Ganem hugs Rosa Sledge
Trey and Michele Ganem weren’t about to let a little rain spoil their holiday party plans, especially considering the surprise they had in store for Edna.  The party was forced inside, but the show went on without a hitch.
The pair recently made headlines when Trey built the casket for the funeral of Rock N’ Roll Hall of Famer Percy Sledge, and to return the favor, Sledge’s family made a stop in Edna at his shop Saturday.
Rosa Sledge, who married Percy in 1980, made an appearance to sing, with his daughter Tanya singing backup. Rosa sang a rendition of Percy’s own “When a Man Loves a Woman,” leaving jaws on the floor as she belted the familiar tune.        The scheduled entertainment, The Hot Attacks from Victoria, were visibly emotional as they played the song.
“This is such an honor,” singer Billy Moeller said after the performance.

Reserve a visit from Santa Claus

Jacklynn Marek and Santa in Edna
Santa Claus is coming to town – on a fire truck. The jolly man is again making the rounds in Jackson County, dropping toys to kids right on their doorsteps, after arriving on an Edna Fire Department truck.
To book Santa for a trip to your home to visit your children, to call the Fire Station at 361-782-3159, and set up a time. A gift should be provided to the fire department for Santa to bring to the home, and as many gifts must be provided as there are children in the home, or Santa will not deliver any.
"It's sad to see three children and only two gifts at a house," said Santa, "I don't want to see them cry. I won't deliver any of them if there aren't enough gifts."
Santa said this is one of his favorite things to do for Jackson County Children, and that he is happy to do it again this year, starting Dec. 15, through Christmas Eve. A donation to the Edna Fire Department is appreciated for the visit.

Game app evolves from dad’s grief

There's a new app waiting to be played by Jackson County and around the world, Tik Tak Roll, a game thought up by Edna's Manuel Palacios.         For him, the idea would not have gotten as far as it has if it hadn’t have been for his son, Sgt. Matthew Travis Palacios, known to family and friends as Matt, who was in his early twenties when the game started to blossom.
"My daughter Madyson was born on Aug. 18, 2012 and had to stay in the neonatal intensive care unit," Palacios said. "I was in the waiting room with her half sister Clarissa, who'd just turned five, and I decided to teach her how to play tic-tac-toe."
Clarissa was having a hard time understanding the concept of the game, so Palacios made his own rules.

Motley to perform at Center for Arts

Jack Motley
Local musician/songwriter Jack Motley will perform at The Texana Center for the Arts on Tuesday, Dec. 8 at 7 p.m.
Motley’s album, “Glad I’m From Texas” will be the theme for the evening and Motley will perform various songs he has written and recorded.
“TCA is proud to present this first concert at our facility,” said Morris Williams, volunteer with the art center. “It is a departure from our usual visual arts education and appreciation showcases. We encourage everyone to attend and listen to one of Jackson County's finest talents.”
After being self-employed, a school teacher and counselor for about 30 years, one day Jack Motley decided that he was going to write a song or two. His life’s experience was full of stories that he believed would be of interest to others, so he devoted a good deal of time and energy to honing his skills.
