'In His Steps' program to kick off at Ganado UMC

Pastor Mark Smith of Ganado United Methodist Church
By Jessica Coleman
Staff Writer
Pastor Mark Smith of Ganado United Methodist Church is shaking things up a bit, and reaching out to a different kind of audience. Instead of standing in front of the congregation and preaching, he’s planning to sit down with people who share his love for God and revive the popular late nineties question, “What Would Jesus Do?”
“Most Bible studies, what you do is you dive in and explore the Bible,” said Smith, “You try to figure out what it was supposed to mean back when it was inspired, and if you’re lucky, how it can be applied today. This is a little different.”
In His Steps, a program based around the Charles Monroe Sheldon novel of the same name, begins on Valentine’s Day. It focuses on doing what Jesus would do in any given situation - spreading love around the community, sometimes making more difficult decisions.

Texas Commissioner of Education visits Industrial ISD

Mike Morath visits Industrial High School Students
Texas Commissioner of Education Mike Morath made a stop in Vanderbilt on Feb. 4 to visit with Industrial ISD students and staff. They discussed concerns, praises, and opportunities for improvement for the Texas educational system. Morath ditched the auditorium and podium for a more intimate setting, a table and chairs where he could sit face to face with students, teachers, administrators and more.
Industrial High School student Cierra Borak was unafraid to ask hard questions, and Morath answered, discussing topics related to standardized testing, overworked teachers, and teacher evaluation.

Deutschburg celebrates 63rd annual Seafood Benefit

Tucked away on an edge of Jackson County, between Francitas and Cape Carancahua, sits the community of    Deutschburg, a speck on the map that is little more than an old school house that serves as a community center.
Once a year, however, that little community center springs to life, with the sounds of fryers, the “glug glug glug” of the sweet tea being poured, and the rambling of an auctioneer.
The annual Deutschburg Community Club Seafood Benefit, always held on the last Saturday in January, brings hundreds of Jackson and Matagorda County residents to the tiny community, and raises funds for charitable organizations in Matagorda and Jackson Counties. On Jan. 30, at the 63rd annual gathering, people from all over drove to Deutschburg to eat their fill of fried seafood and homemade cakes while contributing to causes like Boys and Girls' Clubs, local fire departments, and scholarships for high school students.

Life of Susanna Dickinson to be remembered at Texana Church

The life of Susanna Dickinson, survivor of the Alamo, is to be presented in song and story by songwriter Fletcher Clark and author/historian Donaly Brice.  They will bring to life this unheralded Texas heroine in a program entitled “Songs of Susanna” on February 26, 2016 in the historic Texana Church, 284 Brackenridge Parkway, at 7 pm.
This musical program will follow Susanna in her travels from Tennessee to Gonzales, Texas with her husband Almeron Dickinson, who would become a fallen hero at the Alamo.  Susanna and daughter Angelina were among the people who lived in the old Spanish mission during the 13 day siege.  When the guns and cannons fell silent, only a few remained alive, but Susanna and her daughter lived.  Santa Anna ultimately had her take a capitulation message to Sam Houston whose Texian army was camped in the Gonzales area.  The Texians later routed Santa Anna’s army at San Jacinto.

A Celebration of Life

St. Agnes Catholic Church hosted A Celebration of Life at the Jackson County Services Building for young and old on Jan. 27, to remind people of how sacred and precious life is.

The Most Rev. Brendan Cahill, S.T.D., Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Victoria, was among the guest speakers for the night. Cheryl Thompson-Draper gave a testimonial, "A Purpose to Life," telling of her story and choice not to abort her baby when she was 18 years old. Her son is now married with four children of his own.

The crowd was happy to learn her son, John Schmidt, was there. President of American Faith and Family Ministries in Brenham, Schmidt gave the benediction at the end of the program and shared a hug with his mother.

Madeine Novian, the Program Chairperson for the event, said the turnout was the best they've had so far, and looks forward to next year.
