City approves lease agreement

The transition of the Edna Fire Department to ESD3 is still underway. At the Nov. 5 Edna City Council meeting, council members approved a lease agreement with the ESD3 for the current fire and EMS station. The agreement now goes to the ESD3 for approval.

The agreement calls for no rent or deposit from the ESD3 for use of the city-owned facilities. Instead, the city is asking the ESD3 to provide liability insurance.

Council discussed maintenance to the building, but per the agreement the ESD3 would be responsible for up to the first $1,000 in repairs with additional costs to be considered by the City of Edna.

“We are going to do everything we are able to do to make sure they are not going to have to shell out a lot of money,” said Mayor Joe Hermes.

The remaining ambulance has been transferred to the Jackson County Hospital District.

Ganado schools honor veterans

On Veterans Day, Ganado ISD and Elementary music teach Melissa Barrow put together and hosted a program honoring, celebrating and thanking veterans for their service. Ganado fourth and fifth graders sang their hearts out to well-known patriotic tunes, even including a bit of sign language.
Barrow said the children had been practicing since the end of September, learning one song at a time.
“Children today are quick visual learners,” she said. “We watched a video to learn the signs for ‘You’re a Grand Ol’ Flag,’ and in about two days we had it down.”
Barrow  added she enjoyed watching her students put their best effort into the performance.
“This particular program is important on many levels, it teaches about our history, culture, and patriotism. Patriotism is linked to our emotions and music can convey those feelings better than words,” she said.

Edna Man, 35, killed in Victoria County accident

Derek "DJ" Moreland of Edna was killed in a vehicle/pedestrian accident on Monday
An Edna man was struck and killed by a vehicle while walking along Hwy 87 on Nov. 16. Derek “DJ” Moreland, 35, was struck by a 2010 Chevrolet Camaro around 7:40 p.m., according to Trooper Ruben San Miguel of the Texas Department of Public Safety.

“The driver of the vehicle passed another vehicle, moved back into the right lane, and shortly after he returned to the lane, he struck Mr. Moreland.” he said.

Moreland is said to have been walking in the outside lane of the highway when he was stuck by the right bumper of the Camaro, driven by 38 year old Port Lavaca resident James Turner.

It is believed that Moreland died on impact, and came to rest in the grassy bar ditch. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The vehicle came to a stop a few feet after the impact on the shoulder,” said San Miguel.

Gutierres excited for military opportunity

Ismael Gutierres of LaWard, TX
LaWard native Ismael Gutierres always knew he wanted to be in the military.
“I just always knew I wanted to serve my country and protect the people and country I love,” he said, “I chose the Navy due to my dad previously being in the Navy.”
As a reservist, Gutierres may or may not have ever been deployed, so he volunteered.
“Reservists can get deployed or apply to be deployed, or mobilized, which is why it is important to be ready to go at all times,” he said “This is a big part of the reserves. You fully accept that at any time, the Navy could need you somewhere and you have to put your entire life on hold for a long time to serve our nation.”
After volunteering to be mobilized, and finally being chosen, Gutierres, had to make arrangements for his finances, his home, and his beloved cat.
“You have to get yourself physically and mentally ready for what you’re about to do,” he said.

Trey Ganem in his office at Trey Ganem Designs in Edna
Trey Ganem has made quite a name for himself as someone who likes to give back. He runs a successful business in Edna making custom caskets, and has been known to donate his time and talent to families in need. He’s also made caskets for some big names, including Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Percy Sledge.
Most recently, Ganem has been brainstorming about a way to get the community out and together during Christmas time.    He has decided to throw a giant Christmas party and he hopes to get everyone involved to make it happen.
Ganem is in search of sponsors for the event, which he hopes to make completely free to the pubic. A band – more specifically, Percy Sledge’s band – hopes to attend, as well as his family, including his daughter Tanya Jones, who says she is eternally grateful to Ganem for his work.
