Six accused of organized crime in $15 million case

Popp, Treybig, Bram, and the Schauer brothers.
Six men have been indicted on charges of Engaging in Organized Criminal Activity after they failed to pay millions of dollars they owed to farmers all over the south and east Texas.
Frederich R. Schauer III and his brothers, Kenneth Doyle Schauer and Robert Michael Schauer, along with Ganado businessmen Norbert Benard Popp, David Carl Bram, and Thomas Ted Treybig, are accused of conspiring to steal grain from farmers to the tune of $15 million dollars.
The six operated as Bee Agricultural, a grain brokerage based in Beeville. Prosecutors claim that the company wrote invalid checks or otherwise failed to pay for grain that they then sold and profited from.
Popp, Bram, Treybig, and Robert Schauer have all been released on bond, and Frederich Schauer and Kenneth Schauer are expected to post bond shortly, following a hearing Thursday, Oct. 15 which reduced their bond substantially while adding several conditions.

Tight-knit community supports fire department

Craig Brooks stands next to one of the Carancahua Volunteer Fire Dept. trucks.
Cape Carancahua isn’t a large community, and maybe because of that, it is a tight-knit one. Craig Brooks, the chief of the Carancahua Volunteer Fire Department, said in a community that size, things couldn’t run smoothly without volunteers.
“There’s just so much that needs to be done,” he said “and in a county that doesn’t have a lot of population and not a lot of heavy industry, it’s hard to get a lot of that done.”
From hosting nights out in the community, to responding to wrecks and providing assistance to surrounding departments, to being the first ones on scene when someone within the Carancahua community needs medical assistance, the    Carancahua Volunteer Fire Department is a small, but important one. The department has even been called out to help rescue wildlife.
“It’s 17 miles to everywhere,” he said, “17 miles to a restaurant, 17 miles to a grocery store, in every direction”

A day in the life of a police officer

Officer Mike Yaws patrols the streets of Edna, Texas
He waves to his wife as they pass at the intersection, he in his Edna Police Department Tahoe, monitoring after-school traffic; she in the Mustang he bought her as a gift, on her way to the kids’ football practice. It’s the first time they’ve seen each other all day, and will be the last. He hasn’t stood face-to-face with her in three days.
“Maybe tomorrow,” he says, aloud, but barely.
The Edna Police Department allowed this reporter to ride along with one of its officers for an 11-hour shift to experience first-hand a day in the life of a police officer.
Officer Michael Yaws misses his wife, Anna, misses his kids, but that is the life of a law enforcement officer. He works nights and is sleeping when his family leaves in the morning. They’re asleep when he gets home. They spend time together on his days off.
There aren’t many speeders today, he notices, as he patrols a school zone.
