Warriors buses coming May 19

Warrior's Weekend

By Jessica Coleman
Staff Writer
Warrior’s Weekend approaches, and that means that the Warrior’s Weekend busses full of veterans will be making their way through Jackson County again. It’s a popular event in Edna and Ganado, and it is common to see the streets lined with people decked out in their red, white and blue. During the 2015 pass-through, it was pouring rain, which did not deter Jackson County residents from waving their sopping wet American flags flags, waving from underneath umbrellas.
This, the tenth year for Warrior’s Weekend, will begin on Thursday, May 19. Ron Kocian, president of Warrior’s Weekend said they’re coming a day early to celebrate.
“This is our 10th anniversary,” he said, “so we wanted to do something kind of special. So all the ones that are flying in, are coming into Bush airport, about 550 of them, on Thursday.”

EFD in need of donations for Fire Camp

The Edna Fire Department’s Summer Fire Camp in 2015 was a roaring success. The Edna Fire Department has plans to have the camp again this year, and even have kids already signed up, but they need the help of the public.
The camp is planned this year for June 13 through 17, and will run from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. However, the activities planned for the children are contingent on donations from the public.
The week-long camp allows children to see firsthand the ins and outs of being a firefighter, to explore the vehicles and tools used by fire and EMS personnel and to learn valuable lessons on escaping a burning home and much more.
The kids attended last year’s camp for five days and were allowed to explore the PHI Helicopter, watch the Jaws of Life in action, and even obtain their own CPR certification.

“Construction began roughly two weeks ago and there will be an additional three months of construction,” said Melissa Ruiz, a Kinder Morgan representative out of the Houston office. “For the area around Edna, we will continue construction activities for another month and a half.”
