Firemen honored for distributing smoke detectors

By Jessica Coleman
Staff Writer
Jackson County Emergency Services District 3 and The American Red Cross have teamed up to make sure every home that needs one, has a smoke detector. ESD 3 has installed 400 smoke detectors in Jackson County since the inception of the program, earning them high honors from the Red Cross.
At a banquet on July 14, ESD 3 was named as the recipient of the Guardian Award, an honor only given to one organization within the Gulf Coast Region, which expands over 14 counties.
“Believe me, there was some stiff competition,” said Debbie Ellsworth, the Disaster Program manager for the Crossroads territory, “We competed against Corpus, Kingsville, big cities. I was just ecstatic.”
The award is given to an organization or entity that shows exemplary efforts toward emergency preparation for two or more years.

Nowlin not liable for damages in 2012 accident

Sylvester Boone

By Jessica Coleman
Staff Writer

An Edna Man was found not  liable for damages in the 2012 death of truck driver Sylvester Boone of Markham.

Delbert Nowlin III was driving his Chevy Silverado 1500 southbound on S. Wells St. just after 6 a.m. on March 8, 2012 when he struck crossing pedestrian Boone, who was returning from Gary’s Corner Store to his 18-wheeler, which was parked across the street.

Justin Ham, a pastor from La Ward, testified that he was the first person on the scene, having witnessed the incident.     Ham stated that he was driving northbound on Wells St. on his way to to work at D&S Lease Service in Victoria that morning, and that it was  “strangely dark.” Ham stated he had seen what he thought was “a trash bag or a feed sack” soar across the road, causing him to slow down in order to miss the object.

Helping others helps him

Jarrett Parker

By Jessica Coleman
Staff Writer
Jarrett Parker just wanted to help people like him. How that ended up putting him in a music video, he isn’t actually sure. He just knows that it feels good to help others, and it helps him recuperate both mentally and physically.
Parker found assimilating back into a civilian way of life to be a challenge after spending 12 years in the Air Force, including a deployment in Iraq that left him with PTSD along with a heel spur that left him unable to run and limited his ability to do physical activities.
“I got diagnosed with post traumatic stress in the service from my experiences in Iraq,” said Parker, “So I decided to use my own experiences to go volunteer and help people.”

Jackson County District Attorney Bobby Bell’s recent appointment to district judge leaves Jackson County in need of a replacement DA. Bell is expected to be sworn in as district judge on Aug 8.
Bell said the process to appoint a district attorney is very similar to the process he went through for the district judge appointment.
“The only difference is the county chairman and county precinct chairs will decide who they want to put on the ballot,” Bell said. The district judge appointment was decided by county chairmen and precinct chairs from all the counties in the 267th district.
Lynard Olson is chairman of the Republican Party of Jackson County. He said any attorneys that live in Jackson County who would like to be considered for the position of district attorney should contact him at 281-734-0121 as soon as possible.
