Industrial ISD Bond passes, provisional ballots not counted

At the May 9 meeting of the Industrial ISD Board of Trustees, it was revealed that the three provisional ballots cast in the May 7 bond election were not countable, leaving only three overseas ballots left to be counted. With 122 votes for the bond, and 118 against, even if all three overseas ballots were against, the $25 million bond would still pass. Results are unofficial until canvassed, which will take place next week.

Porche finds success with ‘southern roots rock’ band

T. Ray Porche, photo by Cameron Gott

When he was five years old, Edna’s T. Ray Porche picked up his first guitar – and promptly put it down again. His isn’t the love-at first-strum, childhood-dream-fulfilled story many musicians share after they leave their small-town life to find success in the city, but it is a success story, all the same.
It wasn’t until high school that he returned to music, and a passion was ignited. Porsche found himself with guitar in hand almost constantly, learning, playing, and improving. He went on to play with several bands, finally moving to Houston to find a more active music scene.

Birminghams to perform at Crawfish Festival

Jarrod Birmingham will play at the Ganado Volunteer Fire Department's Crawfish Festival
By Jessica Coleman
Staff Writer
Jarrod Birmingham loves small towns – the friendliness of the people, the sense of close-knit community, and the Americana feel in the air in towns with three-and four-digit populations. It’s a love he can’t give a reason for, but owns nonetheless.
The singer/songwriter is a long time resident of Inez, and filmed his music video, December Gone from his 2010 album Jesus and Johnny Cash at the Ganado Cinema. He said he doesn’t know why he has a soft spot for Ganado in particular, but he does.
“I can’t even tell you why,” said Birmingham, “I really don’t know.”
He has brought his honky-tonk sound to Rear Window Listening Room in Ganado multiple times, and has a fascination with the Cinema.

Reid Ryan, president of the Houston Astros, founder and CEO of the Corpus Christi Hooks, and son of Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan, was the featured speaker. Ryan entertained with stories of growing up with his father, raising his kids to be responsible, and not taking blessings for granted.
U.S. Representative Blake Farenthold, who is a huge Hooks fan, introduced Ryan and presented certificates of merit from his office to the evening’s award recipients.
Matt Minor, chief of staff for State Rep. Phil Stephenson, addressed the attendants in Stephenson’s absence, informing all on Barbara Stephenson’s recent stroke and asking for prayers for the family.

Don’t make a decision based on just a glimpse of a life

Jessica Coleman staff writer, Jackson County Herald-Tribune
By Jessica Coleman
Staff Writer
At this very moment, I have a bedroom full of baby opossums, a deaf, blind, epileptic dog and a three-legged dog in my living room, and probably a husband who is rolling his eyes because I had him blow- dry a chicken.
It all sounds like something out of a sitcom, and as a writer who loves a laugh, I often present it as fun and light hearted.    People see a photo on Facebook of me with my pet chicken Mildred sitting on the sofa and they think, “Oh! I want a pet chicken!” They see me posting pictures of Bingham (the blind, deaf, epileptic one) and think “Oh, he is so quirky and fun! He bumped into the pole! He is so cute! I want a special needs pet.”  They see me post a selfie with a baby opossum and think    “I want to rehabilitate wildlife!” or “I want one as a pet!”
