The Edna Fire Department’s Summer Fire Camp in 2015 was a roaring success. The Edna Fire Department has plans to have the camp again this year, and even have kids already signed up, but they need the help of the public.
The camp is planned this year for June 13 through 17, and will run from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. However, the activities planned for the children are contingent on donations from the public.
The week-long camp allows children to see firsthand the ins and outs of being a firefighter, to explore the vehicles and tools used by fire and EMS personnel and to learn valuable lessons on escaping a burning home and much more.
The kids attended last year’s camp for five days and were allowed to explore the PHI Helicopter, watch the Jaws of Life in action, and even obtain their own CPR certification.
The program was funded by monetary donations, and was helped by donations of things like meals, drinks, and snacks. This year, however, the donations have not rolled in as they did last year. As it stands, the camp won’t have nearly as much to offer children as it did last year.
“We like to give them a tshirt, and a water bottle.” said EFD Captain Nick Strauss. “We’ll make the camp happen regardless, but we need help.”
Individuals, businesses, food establishments – everyone can help in some way, whether it be a check, an offer to provide lunch one day, or donation of tee shirts. Those people and businesses interested in helping the camp happen can contact the Edna Fire Department at 361-782-3159.
