Former 4-H leader checks off bucket list with visit

4-Hers from the mid-1960s drove far to come together and meet at the Edna Country Club to spend time with their former Jackson County assistant extension agent, Dale Pennington, on the weekend of Nov. 16. Pennington came in from Llano with his wife Raylene on Friday evening. His son, Shane Pennington, an acclaimed artist in Dallas, surprised his father with his presence on Saturday.
A few weeks prior, Pennington contacted Paulette Schomburg McElveen, one of his former 4-H students. He told her he’d been compiling a bucket list and wanted to see the 4-H students he’d mentored so many years ago and what they’d made of themselves. The kids, he called them. McElveen reminded him those “kids” had grown up to become some important leaders of the community. She got to work and started making some calls.

Lady Cobra signs with Charleston to play softball

Jordin Jones was smiling big as she wore her South Carolina College of Charleston t-shirt and confirmed her future school colors were nearly the same as her Industrial high school colors, with the main color the same: maroon. Her parents, Roy and Lisa Jones, met with Jones, coaches and school officials to take pictures and celebrate her signing on with Charleston to play softball for the 2014-15 year. The journey to becoming a Cougar was not an easy one, but a fulfilling goal once finished, without a doubt.

Coaches keep promise

On the field the Ganado Indians continue to improve week after week, and it is a direct result of the relationship between the players and the coaches. However, it is also the relationships among the players, and among the coaches themselves.

The coaching staff for the Ganado Indians includes head coach Jimmy Thompson, offensive coordinator Rick Ragsdale, defensive coordinator Jim Patrick Bird, special teams coordinator Tim Harrison, and assistant coaches George Banda, John Armstrong, Rocky Vaclavick, and Andy Bridges. A couple of coaches are new to Ganado this season, but from the outside looking in, you would think these coaches have been coaching together for years.
