Edna athletes are honored

The Edna Athletic Booster Club hosted their Sports banquet on May 11 at the Jackson County Services Building, and numerous athletes were recognized for their efforts.

Maidens fall to Shiner in Regional Quarterfinal match

    The Ganado Maiden softball team played hard but lost to Shiner in an Area match-up on May 14 with a final score of 5-2.
    “We had a great year! It’s sad to have had it end, but I am very proud of my kids,” said Coach Malina Andel. “They worked hard all year long and continued to get better with each practice, game and tournament.”
    Cheyenne Galindo pitched the game and had five runs, two walk and four strikeouts. Hitters for the game were Alexis Mojica, Taylor Mirelez, Cheyenne Galindo, Maddie Workmon and Kendall Alvarez. Mirelez had a double and a run batted in, Workmon had a triple, while Alvarez had a run batted in. Sarah Novak also had a walk.
    “Luckily we were very young so there is a lot to build on,” Andel said. “We will miss our three seniors, Taylor Mirelez, Sarah Novak and Lizzie Callis. I am looking forward to next year!”

County brings in big wins at state track meet

    Jackson County track teams came home from last weekend’s 2015 UIL State Track and Field Meet at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the campus of University of Texas at Austin with handfuls of medals.
    Edna High School sent seven athletes to the state meet. Sierra Pruitt won the 100-meter dash State Championship with a time of 11.42 seconds, and broke the previous state record. She also placed first in the 200-meter dash with a blazing time of 24.67. Pruitt was joined by Kamryn Roman, Ashley Myers and Reagan Luedecke in the 4x100-meter relay. They snatched a silver medal with a time of 48.77.
    Pole Vaulter KayLynn Grudzieski finished third after clearing the bar at 11-6.00. High Jumper Crystal Coulter competed but didn’t record a height on that rain-soaked Friday morning.
    Sprinter Brad Kucera finished ninth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.83 seconds.

Regional 2A track results

    The Ganado track teams traveled Texas A&M Kingsville to compete in the Region IV 2A track meet on May 1-2. The Ganado Indians placed 6th with 38 points.
    First and second placements will go to the Texas State Track meet May 14-16 at the Mike A. Myers Stadium in the University of Texas at Austin. Third place are alternates and will know more later this week.

Regional 3A track meet results

    Edna and Industrial track teams traveled to Converse to compete at the Region IV 3A track meet at D.W. Rutledge Stadium from May 1-2.
    The Edna Cowgirls earned the Regional Championship spot with 76 points, and the Industrial Cobras placed 7th with 32 points. The Industrial Cobras placed 7th with 33 points, and the Edna Cowboys placed 11th with 25 points.
    The first and second placements will move onto the Texas State track meet from May 14-16 at the Mike A. Myers Stadium in the University of Texas at Austin.

Thunder strikes up again

    The Jackson County Thunder baseball team has come back for another season and sporting some new duds. Due to weather the Thunder team wasn’t able to start their season until May 2 at Shelby Park against the LaGrange Demons. Although some Thunder teammates voiced their apprehension about playing the team, the Thunder still struck and won, 8-6.
    Some moves were made in the third inning of the game, both teams scored. In the fourth inning the Thunder made two more runs and added another in the fifth, making the score 4-1. Innings six and seven went quick without scores, and then Thunder really struck in the game until the end with numerous plays.

Cobras get back into play

    The Industrial Cobra baseball team played Odem on May 2 and lost, 2-8.
    “This was a good game to shake the rust off and look at a lot of players in different spots. Garrett Sparkman pitched the first two innings and gave up zero runs on one hit. Daniel Sliva followed Sparkman for the third and fourth, where Odem scratched four in the fourth. Werckle threw the 5th and 6th, allowing three runs on four hits and Carson Popp threw the 7th, giving up one run on two hits,” said Coach Zach Marlow. “The Cobras got on board in the 5th inning with  two out two run double by Werckle.”
    The Cobras will play Stockdale in a bi-district match on Thursday, May 7, at 7 p.m. and Saturday, May 9 at 1 p.m. All the games will be played in Cuero.

Cobras ladies are 2nd in district

    The Industrial Cobra softball team played three games last week to bring their record to 19-5. The girls began by playing Rice Consolidated on April 27 and won, 8-1, to earn them the Second place district spot. Landry Mikulec, Kasi Bethke and Jillian Jones were the leading hitters in that game.
    The Cobras played a bi-district game (best two out of three) against Bloomington on May 1-2, and beat the Bobcats in both games, 11-1 and 18-2. Mikulec pitched a complete game with seven strikeouts. She was also a leading hitter along with Katie Sparkman, they each had two hits and four runs batted in. Jones had two hits, a double and triple, and three runs batted in, while Reagan Doyle had two singles and scored three runs.

    Ganado athletes competed at Harper’s Area track meet on April 18. The Ganado Indians placed 2nd with a total of 77 points, while the Ganado Maidens placed 11th place with 4 points.

District 3A Edna and Industrial track meet results

    Edna and Industrial high school track teams competed at Rice Consolidated on April 15-16. The Edna Varsity Cowgirls were District Champions with 157 points, and the Industrial Cobras girls team placed 4th overall with 114 points. The Industrial Cobras boys team were District Champions with 138 points, and the Edna Varsity Cowboys placed 3rd overall with 117 points.
