Cobras ladies are 2nd in district
The Industrial Cobra softball team played three games last week to bring their record to 19-5. The girls began by playing Rice Consolidated on April 27 and won, 8-1, to earn them the Second place district spot. Landry Mikulec, Kasi Bethke and Jillian Jones were the leading hitters in that game.
The Cobras played a bi-district game (best two out of three) against Bloomington on May 1-2, and beat the Bobcats in both games, 11-1 and 18-2. Mikulec pitched a complete game with seven strikeouts. She was also a leading hitter along with Katie Sparkman, they each had two hits and four runs batted in. Jones had two hits, a double and triple, and three runs batted in, while Reagan Doyle had two singles and scored three runs.
The Cobras went back the next day and annihilated the Bobcats again, giving the team their 20th win. The team gathered 19 hits in that game with Landry Mikulec as pitcher, giving her a 16-5 record for the season so far. She struck out seven.
Coach Ted Malek said the team made one error in the last three games. “We’re coming together and we’re playing well defensively and hitting the ball offensively,” he said.
Lexey Mikulec had two hits, a double and drove in a run, Cierra Borak had two hits and drove in two runs, Elizabeth Kolodieczyk had two hits and scored two runs, and Sparkman had two hits and had three runs batted in. Jones had three hits and a triple with four runs batted in, Kasi Bethke had three hits, a double and a run batted in, Doyle had three hits and scored three runs, while D.J. Adams was the team’s courtesy runner and scored three runs.
This week the team will play an Area match against Florence in LaGrange in a two out of three games series, May 8-9, Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday and 5 p.m.
“Florence has been an undefeated team and I think the girls feel good about the challenge,” Malek said. “If we continue the team concept I think we’ll keep progressing. They just want to play and they’re getting better every week.”
