Ganado looks to silence trains

The City of Ganado is considering creating a Quiet Zone within its jurisdiction. Council members discussed the action at its April 9 regular meeting.
A Quiet Zone eliminates the sounding of train horns in a certain established zone.
Mayor Clinton Tegeler said there have been requests from citizens for a Quiet Zone through the city. He asked council’s opinion and mentioned a concern about liability to the city.
Councilman Mike Konarik said he would like council to pursue it, “just to see what the numbers are.” He added that El Campo and Louise both have Quiet Zones.
Tegeler said he would pursue it to see what is involved.
In other business, the council set a workshop for the third week of May to discuss a planning and capacity study that was performed in 2012. The study was paid for by a grant the city received.

It was a clean sweep for Edna

The City of Edna kicked off its annual Clean Sweep on April 12. A number of items, such as furniture, window frames, carpet and plywood were taken to the Edna city barn on N. Kleas Street from April 12-13. The items were unloaded and put into dumpsters. Edna City employees Hunter Hicks, left, and Eddie Granados unload items to get them ready to be hauled off. Sheila Miller, code enforcement officer for the city, said the city won’t know how much trash was collected during the sweep until next week.

Edna store sells $6 million lotto ticket

By Chris Lundstrom
General Manager
Mike and Debbie Van Pelt of Ganado are just as anxious as everyone else to know the identity of the $6 million winner of Saturday’s Lotto Texas drawing. Their store, Conner’s Corner Store in Edna, sold the winning ticket.
According to the Texas Lottery Commission website, there was only one winning ticket sold in the April 13 lotto and the winner chose their own numbers. They will have two options to collect their winnings – either as an annuity which would give them $5 million or taking the cash, which amounts to $3.5 million after taxes. Any way you look at it, it is a healthy chunk of change.
