David Waldrip

David E. Waldrip of Raymondville, formerly of Grandview, passed away at the age of 75 on Saturday, March 7, 2015.  He was born to Samuel Elvin and Julia Cosgrove Waldrip Jan. 5, 1940 in Cleburne. 
    David graduated from Cleburne High School in 1958.  During and after high school David worked for Safeway Grocery Store and Mrs. Baird's Bakery. In 1964 David opened his first grocery store in Milford, Texas. Soon after, he founded David's Supermarkets, Inc.
    David is survived by a loving family and many friends.  He was preceded in death by his father, Elvin.
    At Davids' request, there will be no services.  The family has asked that if you have any special memories, stories or moments you would like to share please send to David's Supermarkets, Box 350, Grandview, Texas 76050.

Dorothy Cooper Smith

Dorothy Ann Cooper Smith, age 86, entered into eternal rest on Sunday, Feb. 22, 2015.  Born on June 14, 1928 in Oklahoma City to Bill and Gayle Cooper, Dorothy pursued life with vigor. Working as a dietician following graduation from Texas Women's University, she met the love of her life, Walter Smith. Walter and Dorothy were married on Sept. 7, 1954 and raised their children while working side by side on Stella Ranch, Sun Valley Ranch and H.R. Smith Ranch.
     In retirement, she was an Elder and Deacon at Northminster Presbyterian Church in San Antonio and volunteered in local hospitals and for hospice. 
    Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Walter Ewing Smith; daughter-in-law, Jackie Smith; son-in-law Jim Starlin; grandchildren, Chris Condit and Jimmie Clay Smith and nephew Jeff Cooper.

Santos Garcia

    Santos Lara Garcia, of San Antonio,  passed away Saturday, Feb. 28, 2015, at the age of 72. He was born Oct. 29, 1942, in Victoria, to the late Santos Cruz Garcia and Mary Lara Paredes.
    Santos retired from the U.S. Army after 20 years of active duty service. He was a member of the St. Anthony Catholic Church for many years. Santos was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend who will be missed dearly.
    He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Esther Cruz Garcia; daughter; Evelyn Monica Infante and her husband Valentine of San Antonio; son, Santos Lance Garcia of San Antonio; eight sisters and one brother; one grandchild, Koda Infante of San Antonio; and many loving family members and friends.
    Santos is preceded in death by his parents.

LaWanda Asbeck

    LaWanda Joyce Asbeck, of Edna, passed away Thursday, Feb. 26, 2015 at the age of 82. She was born in Fort Worth on Feb. 17, 1933, to the late Albert James Apple and Buelah Vista Grant Apple.
    She was a security guard for many years. LaWanda was also a loving grandmother, sister and friend who will be missed dearly.
    LaWanda is survived by her granddaughter, Ann Marie Asbeck Wyrick and spouse Jennifer Wyrick of Edna; sisters, Barbara Ann Apple McCans Manning and Martha Sue Apple Millerd; and daughter in law, Janice Marie Gadbois (Fred) of Houston.
    LaWanda is preceded in death by her parents; husband, William Lee Asbeck; son, Donald Asbeck.
    A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, March 3, in the Memory Gardens Cemetery of Edna. Rev. Adam R. Knapp will officiate.

Janey Bess Fowler

    Janey Bess Fowler,73, passed away Wed. Feb. 25, 2015. She was born July 2, 1941 in Ganado, the late Vernie Wilson and Alpha Eubanks Fowler.
    Janey is survived by her two brothers; David (Estha) Fowler and Lance ( Peggy) Fowler.
    Janey is preceded in death by her parents.
    Graveside services will be held Friday, Feb. 27, at 10 a.m. at the Ganado Cemetery, with Mr. Donald Fowler presiding.
    Services are under the direction of Ganado Funeral Home, 800 So. Third St. 361-771-2120.

David Sabedra Sr.

    David Soto Sabedra Sr., 75, of La Ward, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 19, 2015, after a courageous battle with brain and lung cancer. He was born March 13, 1939. He served his country in the U.S. Army.
    He is survived by his siblings, Fidel, Daniel, and Bernaldo Sabedra, Elvira Moreno, Erminia Salinas, and Eva Castillo; children, Elizabeth De Leon, David Jr., Esmeralda, Victoria, Daniel David, Hope, Jane, and Monica; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous cousins and friends.
    He is preceded in death by his wife, Juanita O. Sabedra; son, Manuel David Sabedra; parents, Manuel and Luisa Sabedra; brothers, Delfino, Abel, and Alfred; and sister, Margaret Sabedra.

Dempsey Quarles

    Dempsey Wayne Quarles, 86, passed away Feb. 21, 2015. He was born May 22, 1928, in Edna to the late W.H. (Bill) and Mary Dittrich Quarles. He was the first of four children. Dempsey worked for Jackson County Pct. 1 and Dennis Auto Service.
     He is preceded in death by his parents, and brother Dennis Quarles.
    Dempsey is survived by his sisters, LaNell McCurdy and Wilda Miska, nephew, David  McCurdy, niece Karma McCurdy, great-nephew, William Wayne McCurdy and "Lily".
     A Celebration of Life will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 25, at the Slavik Funeral Home Chapel in Edna.
    Pallbearers will be David McCurdy, Wayne McCurdy, Scotty Quarles, Bryan Miska, Ronnie DeBord and Melvin Laughter.
    Services are under the direction of Slavik Funeral Home, 209 N. Allen St., 361-782-2152.

Candido Benavides

    Candido Benavides, 95, of Edna passed away on Feb. 1, 2015 in Shenandoah, at Health South Hospital.
    He was born on Sept. 10, 1919 in Edna, to the late Eulalio and Juanita Benavides. People knew Candido Benavides by his nickname "Candy”, in Edna and the surrounding towns. He was a very hard working man until the age of 83. He worked for G.W.Townsend Construction Company, Hunt Construction, Holiday Construction, and retired from Atkinson Lumber Company.
    Candido was preceded in death by his wife Florence Santellana Benavides; brothers Frank Benavides, Guadalupe Benavides, Alfredo Benavides, Margarito Benavides, and sister, Eva Sanchez.

Kevin Stallings

Kevin David Stallings, 56, passed away on Friday, Feb. 20, 2015 in Houston. He was born June 12, 1958 in Kermit to the late Jimmy Allen and Billie Lou Stallings.
    Kevin graduated from Refugio High School in 1976. He received a welding degree from Bee County College and went to work for Brown and Root. He then worked for Eye Masters for many years.
    He is survived by brother Larry (Sharon) Stallings of Victoria and Jeffery (Cherie) Stallings of Houston. He is also survived by nieces ,nephews and cousins.
    He was preceded in death by his parents and step-mother, Marie Stallings.
    A graveside service was held on Tuesday, Feb. 24 in Oakwood Cemetery at noon.

Altha Robinson

    Altha Faye Hines Robinson 85, of Edna passed away on Feb. 16, 2015. She was born on March 14, 1929 in Morales to the late Eugene Hines and Velma Tones Hines. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Ralph Robinson Sr.; daughters, Linda Faye and Joselyn Robinson; son, Ralph Robinson, Jr.; and brothers, Johnny and Kenneth Hines.
    She leaves to cherish her memory three daughters, Velma and Michelle Robinson and Kathy Heard, son, Tracey Dean Robinson, brother, Hugh Hines, six grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and a host of other relatives and friends.
    Visitation will be held Friday, Feb. 20 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Cook-Butler Funeral Home and Chapel, Edna. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 21 at 11 a.m. at Shiloh Baptist Church with burial to follow at Hines Cemetery.
