The importance of finding time for us

By Jessica Coleman
Staff Writer

This past weekend, I went to Galveston with my husband. The kiddo is in north Texas with my sister and her children until Saturday, and Brian and I found ourselves for once sharing a day off. I woke up Sunday morning far later than I had planned to, and was greeted with “Do you have work today?”
I answered that, yes, I had some work to do, but I didn’t have a time frame for it for the day, so long as the story was ready by press time Monday, all was good.
So, Brian suggested we go to Galveston (by “suggested,” I mean he said “cool, get dressed.”). We threw on some clothes and hopped in the car.

Retired fire marshal leaves a legacy

There are a lot of things people can say about Buster Chase, but you can bet, it won't be anything bad.
Buster spent 28 years as a employee of the City of Edna then ten years prior to that as a volunteer Firefighter/EMT with the city.
It's hard to think of that at times, 38 years of service and dedication to the citizens of Jackson County. I say that because I haven't been alive that long. Or, like Buster would say, "My mustache is older than you."
The only thing Buster loved more than this department and the people of Edna were his family and faith.

Keep pets safe this Independence Day

By Jessica Coleman
Staff Writer/Happy Tails Animal Shelter Vice President
There are a few times a year that we, in animal rescue, dread. One of those times is the entire month of February, when the new wears off of the Christmas puppies, and we are inundated with phone calls asking us to take in pups that families “don’t have time for anymore.” The other times are January 1 and July 4, because on those days, fireworks are a big part of the festivities.
Days like Independence day, for humans, are days of celebration. We gather, we eat, we watch and set off fireworks with our friends and families. For our furry family members, fireworks are anything but fun. They are terrifying.

Saying a little thank you to all

The school year is almost over and here at the newspaper, it’s been busy. I mean really busy. Graduation time at the paper means details and keeping an eye out for them. With Diapers to Diplomas ads, the senior insert and ceremonies to be attended, it’s a wonder we’re not drinking (more) and call in sick to work for a week.
I suppose that’s what the summer is there for.
Anyhow, since we’re a small paper each person is basically a department of their own (if you didn’t know that already). News reporting was done by Lisa Shapiro and Jessica Coleman, and now it’s just Jessica. Lisa helped type endless senior questionnaires and went back over them again and again, not to mention being a liaison with the schools.

Journalism is a noble, and sometimes dangerous, profession

Recently, journalists were given a day to appreciate freedom of expression. We look back at all of the sacrifices made by journalists to attain this freedom.
World Press Freedom Day took place on May 3. It was created and sponsored by the United Nations. Many countries around the world do not have freedom of speech or freedom of the press. Some publications have been terrorized or shut down by radical groups or a communist government.
On Jan. 7, two brothers, Saïd and Chérif Kouachi, forced their way into the offices of the French satirical weekly newspaper Charlie Hebdo in Paris. They were armed with assault rifles and killed 11 people and injured 11 others in the building. They claimed to be members of an Islamist terrorist group. They were outraged by a series of satirical cartoons of Muhammad and prompted them to commit the heinous acts.

Spring break - bah humbug

It is tough sitting in this office today. As the rain falls steadily on the roof, trying to lull me to sleep, I know that somewhere out there people are having fun in the sun.
Profiles on Facebook are full of pictures from fun places that include cruise ships, Mickey Mouse, swimming pools – all places that are on my weekly bucket list, meaning I need to go there every week. I am a fun-in-the-sun kind of girl and there is no fun in the sun happening here.
Face it, folks. Spring break is for kids. And kids parents who can take off when their kids are on spring break. For the rest of us it is just another week of the year. I can only imagine the reaction young adults feel when they realize they got their wish and are so grown up that spring break is a thing of the past.

I need a paperwork reduction act

I sometimes feel like I am drowning in a sea of paper. Everywhere I turn there are pieces of paper that need to be dealt with. That doesn’t come as much of a surprise since I work at a newspaper. But that’s not the paper that is haunting me. It’s all the other paper in my life that comes in daily and has accumulated through the years.
Life was so much simpler and uncluttered when I was young and carefree, but there was always the paper that needed to be dealt with. Open the mailbox and paper disguised as bills, lovely sales flyers, and assorted junk mail falls out. Go to a store and get a receipt. Buy something and it comes with a pile of papers – assembly instructions, limited warranty, all in five different languages. At least back then it was only my paper that needed to be handled. Add 40 years, a husband and five children, and you are looking at a problem.
