Robert O'Connor named finalist

After a tedious process, Edna Independent School District Board of Trustees were able to break it down to the top candidate for the new Edna ISD superintendent. During a special meeting on Nov. 12, trustees named Robert O’Connor as the finalist.
O’Conner is a sitting superintendent at Columbus Independent School District.
EISD Trustee Donnie Long said after the interview with O’Connor, looking at his resume and doing a background check on him everything looked good. Long said trustees were impressed with some of the things O’Connor had done in the past with Columbus ISD. He said Columbus ISD is demographically similar to Edna ISD.
“We felt he was a top candidate because of his overall knowledge of the school business,” Long said. “We feel he will take us up to the next level academically.”
The vote to name O’Connor the lone finalist was unanimous. On Dec. 4, the Edna ISD Board of Trustees will act on hiring O’Conner, EISD Board Trustees President Patrick Brzozowski said. The new superintendent is projected to start on Jan. 1, which is the start of the new semester.
“An employment start date has not been finalized,” Brzozowski said. “We anticipate January 1 or soon thereafter would be an appropriate date.”
According to state law, school boards must wait at least 21 days after announcing a finalist before officially appointing a superintendent.
Long said the board went through the process with a consultant (Texas Association of School Boards). He said trustees interviewed seven applicants first before narrowing it down to the top three finalists. Long said trustees spent seven nights, four hours per night interviewing each of the seven applicants. The overall process took several weeks before they could narrow it down to their lone finalist.
“We had some really good candidates,” Long said. “It’s a huge decision to make.”
