Early voting for Ganado TRE begins July 22

Early voting for the Ganado Independent School District tax ratification election will be Monday, July 22 to Friday, Aug. 2 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on each business day at the new Ganado ISD Administration Office, 210 S. 6th Street in Ganado.
The TRE will not result in an increase in the total tax rate if the voters ratify the $1.17 maintenance and operations tax rate because the board will lower the interest and sinking fund tax rate to match this year’s total tax rate, according to Ganado ISD Superintendent Jeff Black.
“Either way, pass or fail, the total tax rate would be $1.2082,” he said. “If the tax ratification election is passed, the M&O tax rate would be $1.17 and the interest and sinking tax rate would be set at $0.0382 for a total tax rate of $1.2082. If the TRE is not passed, the M&O tax rate would be $1.04 and the I&S tax rate would be set at $0.1682 for a total tax rate of $1.2082.”
Black said Ganado ISD should have a TRE because even though the tax rate would be the same due to the way the TEA formulas are calculated, Ganado ISD would receive approximately $300,000 more from the state in each of the 2013-14 and 2014-15 school years. These are funds that will be used to provide more resources for the the Ganado ISD students.
If the TRE is passed, the board of trustees will discuss what to do with the extra funding.
“That would be up to the board if the TRE passes, but some initial discussions have been regarding buses and more instructional resources,” he said.
The tax ratification election is set for Tuesday, Aug. 6 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Ganado ISD Media Center, 312 W. Rogers in Ganado.
