County hospital changes record storing process

If you have visited the Jackson County Medical Clinic in the past six weeks, chances are it took far longer than it used to. That’s because the clinic is changing the way they keep patients’ medical records.
Previously, records were stored on paper charts and files. In 2009 President Obama signed into law the American Recovery and Investment Act which established programs and incentives for providers and hospitals for the “meaningful use” of certified electronic health records. What this means is that now hospitals and doctors will need to enter all patient medical records in a computer program that will store them safely and efficiently.
“This has been a process, not an event,” said Bill Jones, CEO and administrator of the Jackson County Hospital District. “The transition to electronic records is required by law, but it is very time-consuming with a steep learning curve. Currently we are unable to see our normal volume of patients at the clinic as providers and staff adjust to the new system.”
