Man dies after ingesting drugs during traffic stop

 

Charles Jeffery Kitchens died Monday night in the Jackson County Hospital after a traffic stop by Edna Police.
Kitchens, 35, of Victoria, was a passenger in a car driven by Will Jeff Turner Jr. 
Officers pulled the vehicle over on Rowlett St. in Edna for a routine traffic stop. Turner Jr., 49, of Edna, was arrested for felony DWI and possession of a controlled substance, cocaine, with intent to deliver. Kitchens was also arrested for possession of a controlled substance, cocaine, with intent to deliver and tampering with physical evidence after officers suspected he ingested some of the evidence.
According to Curt Gabrysch, chief lieutenant for the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, Turner Jr. and Kitchens were transported to the Jackson County Detention Center. Prior to booking, Kitchens entered the jail and was then taken to the Jackson County Hospital for a medical evaluation. He died at 11:40 a.m. at the hospital.
Dwayne Taylor, Pct. 2 Justice of the Peace, was notified and an autopsy ordered. Kitchens was taken to the Travis County Medical Examiner’s office and a toxicology report is pending. According to Gabrysch, the preliminary autopsy showed no obvious trauma to the body.
Gabrysch said the Texas Rangers are investigating the incident at the request of the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.
Turner Jr.’s bond was set at $10,000 for tampering with physical evidence and $25,000 for the drug charge. He remains in the Jackson County Detention Center.
