Linda Hamons

Linda Ann Hamons, of Ganado, went to be with the Lord on Friday, Jan. 27, 2017 at the age of 68. She was born in El Campo on March 21, 1948, to the late Lee D. Hamons, Sr. and Laura A. Wied.
Linda was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend who will be missed dearly. Linda was El Campo’s very first polio victim of 1949. She was a patient at the Gonzales Warm Springs Foundation on and off throughout her childhood where she underwent many surgeries.
She had a lovely voice and was chosen to sing at numerous events including the annual Christmas party at the Arabia Temple Crippled Children’s clinic in Houston as well as many other benefits and charity balls in Wharton County.
On June 4, 1966, she married her sweetheart Wayne and moved to Bay City. Against medical advice, she had two children, and was a stay at home wife and mother.
Linda was an exceptional baker and her specialty was homemade bread. She loved life and had a strong determination to live it to the best of her ability. She loved the color red, country and western music, pickles, and socializing with family, friends, and neighbors. Her strong faith in God made it possible to overcome all of the many obstacles she faced in her life. Linda continued to be a medical miracle for the rest of her life. Doctors were always amazed at the way she bounced back from illness. Her gradual decline in health was just too much to sustain any longer and she succumbed to the final ravages of post-polio syndrome.
She is survived by her daughter; Deanne Renee Barrie and her husband Christopher of Bay City; son, Russell Todd Melton of Bay City; sisters, Sandra Green (Howard) and Gail Hamons (Archie); brother, Lee Hamons, Jr. (Barbara); grandchildren, Chelsea Barrie, Russell Melton, Jr., Blaine Melton; great-grandchild, Ariella Melton; stepmother, Virginia Hamons; former husband, Wayne Louis Melton; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Linda is preceded in death by her parents; and nephew Michael Hamons.
Memorial service will be held on Thursday, Feb. 2 at 2 p.m. in the St. James Lutheran Church of Ganado. Rev. Chris Heinold will be officiating.
Special thanks to the doctors and staff at Detar Hospital in Victoria as well as the staff at Ganado Nursing home for taking care of Linda until the end. Also a special thanks to those who visited her throughout the years because it was greatly appreciated.
Arrangements are under the direction of Oaklawn Funeral Home in Edna. 361-782-2221.
