ESD passes, incumbents win

The City of Edna Fire/EMS employees were understandably relieved when the results of the Emergency Services District 3 election became available after the polls closed on May 11.
Voters in the Edna ISD decided 441 to 260 to form ESD3 which would fund fire and EMS services for residents in the Edna ISD.
According to Jackson County Judge Dennis Simons, the next step will be for the votes to be canvassed by the commissioners court. After the votes are certified, the court will choose five ESD commissioners to oversee the ESD. Simons said anyone interested in serving as a commissioner on the ESD board should send a letter of interest to him at 115 W. Main in Edna. The letter should include qualifications and information about the individual and why they want to serve on the board.
“The commissioners court will then appoint a board of five commissioners to serve until January 1. At that time we will choose who serves a 1-year or 2-year term.”
ESD commissioners serve two year terms and are always appointed by the county commissioners court.
The City of Edna plans to work closely with the county to help get everything in place so the ESD 3 can be on the tax roll by October 1, according to Ken Knight, city manager.
“There will be an interlocal agreement between the ESD and the City of Edna,” Knight said. “The city of Edna will provide these services in the ESD area.”
