Indians hammer Hornets
The Ganado Indians won their season opener against the Louise Hornets 47-8.
The Indian offense was highly successful, passing a lot more and giving many different players the ball. The Indians’ success didn’t come perfectly; there were many fumbles, flags, and other setbacks. Head Coach Keith Wright blames it on first game nerves, but is still very proud of the team’s performance, praising the offense. The first touchdown of the night for the Indians came with carries by seniors Matthew Sterling and Garrett McCann set the Indians up with first and goal, leaving senior quarterback Michael-Douglas Maresh to finish the job in the first quarter, 6-0.
The second quarter was dominated offensively by Sterling and McCann, scoring three touchdowns together, and Sterling with a roughly 60 yard kick-off return, following the Hornets’ only touchdown of the night.
The second half was still offensively strong. Other players, such as senior Matt Bridges, junior Colby Swift, and junior Jacob Martinez also got their hands on the ball. Maresh had a solid pass to Bridges for 47 yards and Martinez ran it in for a touchdown. One of the biggest plays of the night was a touchdown pass from Maresh to McCann for around 65 yards.
The offense wasn’t the only sold half of the Indians’ night. The defense was very aggressive, especially with many tackles coming from seniors Malcom Chaisson and Michael Malek, as well as McCann and Bridges in addition to many passes defended by senior Cameron Lambert.
The Indians are set to play in Palacios Friday, Sept. 2 at 7:30 p.m.
