Warrior's Weekend

Warrior’s Weekend approaches, and that means that the Warrior’s Weekend busses full of veterans will be making their way through Jackson County again. It’s a popular event in Edna and Ganado, and it is common to see the streets lined with people decked out in their red, white and blue. During the 2015 pass-through, it was pouring rain, which did not deter Jackson County residents from waving their sopping wet American flags flags, waving from underneath umbrellas.
This, the tenth year for Warrior’s Weekend, will begin on Thursday, May 19. Ron Kocian, president of Warrior’s Weekend said they’re coming a day early to celebrate.
“This is our 10th anniversary,” he said, “so we wanted to do something kind of special. So all the ones that are flying in, are coming into Bush airport, about 550 of them, on Thursday.”
The group hopes to gather at Prasek’s in Hillje around 3:45 p.m. and to be in Ganado around 5 p.m.
“We want to get on 59, then come through Ganado, and then get off again and come through Edna just like every year,” said Kocian.
In a slight change from years past, motorcycle riders will lead the pack, as opposed to being inside the escort.
“Motorcycle riders are welcome,” said Kocian. “They will be released from Prasek’s ahead of the busses, and the escort will come a few minutes behind them.”
The group will also gather at the Field of Honor in Victoria around 9 p.m. to dedicate the field, and all are welcome to attend that event as well.
Warrior’s Weekend is a fully volunteer-driven organization and is not associated with the Wounded Warrior Project. They take veterans for a weekend of fishing and fun in Port O’Connor every May.
