Cowboys get into district
Edna Cowboys suffered a tough loss in their District opener to Rice Consolidated, with a final score of 6-3.
So far their district record is 0-2, but Head Coach Troy Holcomb said don’t let the numbers fool you.
“We are young and getting better with each game,” he said. “Each player has accepted their role and have played very well the whole season. What we need to learn is how to finish games and hold onto leads.”
Pitching for the ‘Boys in the Rice game was Dylan “Ya-Ya” Yaws and Paul Cortez. Yaws pitched four innings and gave up seven hits, had six strikeouts, one walk, six runs and five errors. He left one on the bases. Cortez pitched two innings and gave up a hit and had one strikeout.
Hitting for the ‘Boys, Caleb Ellison was one for two with a walk, one single and one run scored, and Cade Orsak was one for three with a single and a run scored. Sergio Vega was two for three with two singles and John Reyes was one for three with one single and one run scored.
Holcomb said pitching-wise senior Landon Myers has looked very good in his last two starts, and with some offensive help he will be a dominate force for the rest of district play. He also said sophomore Yaws is on when he can take over a game pitching.
“Sophomore Riley Gerdes has played multiple positions in the infield as well as pitched as a closer/reliever and done well at relieving late in games. His ability to handle the bat has paid big for us by bunting, getting on base when we need it, always seems to be at plate when we need a big hit. Junior Cade Orsak is the leader of the outfield, and a consistant, all-around good ball player. Senior Sergio Vega, our DH/!B has done well at driving in runs, has handle a position change from 3B to 1B very well and will be a force in this race. Sophomore Josh Yaws has been a rock at Shortstop for us so far this season as well,” Holcomb said.
The Edna junior varsity Cowboys tied seven all with Rice Consolidated in their district opener.
The Cowboys will have played Edna on March 28 and will play Hallettsville on Friday, April 1.
“These ‘Boys have played with the joy and passion you like to see ball players have and have stayed confident through out the season. These young men don't give up and battle you the whole game, they feel like they are never out of the game at anytime. Things will turn around for these young men and as they say "Believe" in what they are shooting for,” Holcomb said.
