An Edna man was struck and killed by a vehicle while walking along Hwy 87 on Nov. 16. Derek “DJ” Moreland, 35, was struck by a 2010 Chevrolet Camaro around 7:40 p.m., according to Trooper Ruben San Miguel of the Texas Department of Public Safety.
“The driver of the vehicle passed another vehicle, moved back into the right lane, and shortly after he returned to the lane, he struck Mr. Moreland.” he said.
Moreland is said to have been walking in the outside lane of the highway when he was stuck by the right bumper of the Camaro, driven by 38 year old Port Lavaca resident James Turner.
It is believed that Moreland died on impact, and came to rest in the grassy bar ditch. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
“The vehicle came to a stop a few feet after the impact on the shoulder,” said San Miguel.
No charges have been filed at this time, and according to DPS there is no evidence that either Moreland or Turner were under the influence of alcohol or drugs of any kind. The investigation into the accident is ongoing.
