Commissioners table abatement action

Jackson County commissioners tabled action on a proposed abatement agreement with Formosa Plastics after hearing concerns from some residents who first wanted to review the agreement. The commissioners court met for a public hearing on a reinvestment zone on Nov. 12.
The proposed agreement for Formosa’s estimated $1 billion expansion into Jackson County, consists of a 100 percent tax abatement for the first six years beginning in January, 2016. The company plans to build a power generating unit, and low density polyethlene and high density polyethlene plants on land Formosa owns in the southern part of the county.
County Judge Dennis Simons said the proposed plant would provide 140 new permanent full-time jobs and thousands of temporary jobs during the construction phase.
During the abatement period Formosa would pay $2.3 million to the county, beginning with $50,000 in 2016, $100,000 in 2017, $200,000 in 2018 and $650,000 per year for the remaining three years.
David Rose and Johnny Dugger, two of the residents who filled the commissioners courtroom during the public hearing, both said they were in favor of the abatement, but wanted the citizens of the county to have the opportunity to review it and be able to give feedback to the commissioners.
Johnny Belicek, Pct. 3 commissioner, said he was elected to represent all the citizens and did not want there to be any question about transparency of the court. The remaining commissioners agreed and voted to table any decision until a future meeting can be scheduled.
